Post subject:  Tool kit Metric or SAE or Both

I'm old school and generally carry a small took kit in the car. Have not had a chance to work on the CRD yet, but figure I have an American car with an Italian Engine. So are the nuts and bolts on this car SAE, Metric or both?

I'm guessing my emergency tool kit will need to cover both.

Metric -
the only SAE I've found are the lug nuts.

Brake bleeders are 3/8.

"American" car doesn't mean diddly for what kind of bolts are in the engine. I've found both, but the most common one is the 10-mm nut. Keep a set of both with you, and you will be ready for anything.

Sometimes you get a worn down or rusty nut or bolt head that will round off if you put on the correct size socket. One trick I have used is to go to either the Metric or SAE size that is slightly smaller and tap on the socket with a small hammer. Also you will find different fits between different brands,If you are strapped for Cash, go for the Six point sockets first and add the twelve point later. Six point sockets are less apt to split only because most of them have thicker walls than twelve points.
I have every thing from Snapon, to SK, Craftsman, and Harbor Freight depending upon what I am doing.

Good Luck

Yea, I forgot to mention that about the quality of the sockets... But I have so many different sets, I think I would be able to open a hardware store!

The Autozone Mastergrip (or whatever they are) sockets are pretty good, generally any set that has both for $40 or so will give you most of what you need for the car.

For the budget minded, I recommend Pittsburgh tools from Harbor Freight. They're about as good as anything else.

The Pittsburgh impact sockets are the strongest on the market believe it or not.
