Hello all...

After lurking around for quite a while, and finally getting my account setup, I am here to help with what I can and pick brains for what I don't know. I have been in the automotive aftermarket industry for a number of years, and know one or two things about forced induction. My Jeep is my first diesel, so it is going to be a learning curve, but nothing I can't tackle.

Enough about me....

Although it looks like an add, this is actually my Jeep.

Welcome to L.O.S.T., Rich. There are some things to look at doing immediately -EHM, ORM, etc. - to preserve the loveability, driveability, and overall satisfactability (?) of your CRD. If you've been lurking a while, I imagine you are familiar with them already.

Cheers!

Welcome, Rich. First things first, time to replace that front license tag with something better, like a LOST logo.

someone mail me the logo QUICK before my tabs come in. MN requires front license plates :( and my plates keep the police from bugging me too much.

Original owner of my CRD had clogging issues with the EGR on a number of occasions. The ORM fixes this, but tosses the CEL... does this put things into open-loop, or is the MAF excluded from the closed-loop operation list? Again... new to diesels.

As for the EHM, from what I read it is just a simple "catch-can" to remove vapor from the crankcase breathing system. If so, I just gave mine away during the part-out of my previous daily driver.

I put Samco's in yesterday, as the stock lines were starting to get nasty. I found a block heater plug while I was in there, and wondered how to ID that as a Mopar part, or something aftermarket? I am seriously looking at getting the GDE flash, and am constantly looking for an un-neutered TCM.

I am still in warranty, and will do my best to keep it that way till 70k clicks off... then it's fun time! I have 51k on the clock now, but the way we are using this for our camping vehicle, that may not last more than a year.

Also... what is the "Type 43" on the gauge cluster? And is there such an animal as a Type 42 that is compatible with the CRD? Considering that "42" is the ultimate answer.

type 43 is just the "code" for the dash cluster itself...not indicative of anything of substance or a warning light.

I know it's not a fault code, I was just trying to make a bad joke to anyone that knows what I was talking about.

You can keep the type 43 cluster as long as your towel is in the passenger seat and never wear your danger sunglasses while driving.

I think all the U.S. CRD's came with the block heater. The EHM will save those pretty SAMCO hoses. EHM is cheap and will give you time to get a provent or whatever done. GDE tune will take care of the EGR issue for you. In the meantime you'll get a pretty good approximation of the increased performance you'll get by doing the ORM. You will need a OBDII tool to clear the CEL when you reconnect the MAF.

Also recommend cleaning the boost sensor as described in the tech section. doesn't gum up as bad with the ULSD, but if it is dirty, you may see some performance gains once its clean and working properly.

Cheers.

Before you get the GDE, you could try the Edge Trailjammer. As it happens, I have one available for a LOT less than they sell for new. :D

They install in 5 minutes, remove just as fast so that the dealer has no knowledge of its existence, and add about 3mpg with careful driving (try not to enjoy the new power too much!)

I would certainly do the EHM and the ORM, a ScanGauge can be used to clear the codes after you start the engine if you don't like the idiot light. For the ultimate in fixing the EGR issue, a Provent takes care of the CCV slime and an SEGR circuit will completely eliminate the EGR without an idiot light so that the dust is gone too. No dust + slime = no mud in the intake = happy CRD.

Better watch your Ps and Qs up in MN before doing the EHM mod you may need to go Provent or other oil separator to stay legal. Environmental laws in MN are either sound common sense and a model for the rest of the country or FAR OUT WAKO, depending on who was in office at the time. Cover your back side and check.

I lol'd!!!

Rather than fiddling with splices, piggy backs, and other "patchwork fixes" I am just going to send in my spare (did I mention I have a spare) ECU for the GDE. That way it is done right, and everything is tuned out of the ECU. Then when I go back to the dealer, I just swap out my factory ECU and let them smile. Same thing I used to do on my ole POS Neon.

So from what I see, the provent takes vapor off the PCV system, passes it through a capture chamber, to remove water and oil, then takes the vapor free air and plumbs it back into the intake system. Is this correct?

...and Ford told me to always know where my towel is.

Author:  linewarbr [ Tue Aug 11, 2009 2:34 pm ]
Post subject:

That is correct. Removed oil vapor = no oil condensing inside your CAC system.

I have the GDE tune, and am very happy. I haven't cleaned my MAP sensor since getting it, so I don't know yet how effective it has been that it removed EGR soot from my intake, but I am pretty confident that I will be pleased when I pull the sensor at my next oil change.

I would also suggest ditching the stock exhaust; I changed mine out a couple weekends ago and have experienced even more linear power delivery (no backpressure above 2000 rpm) and my turbo is now no longer making a harmonic noise around 2200 rpm.

Now about that type 42/ 43. . . . :?:

42 is all you need, and it will help you "enjoy your trip through the door" anytime.

Figured it out yet? If you are getting frustrated, you could relax with some Vogon poetry...
