98,000 miles I was just at the dealer for my 50,000 mile service and they said they had seen one other CRD. That was comforting! The service tech said they had to replace the engine. The owner changed the oil once at 5,000 miles. At 98,000 miles the engine siezed. Sounds impossible, but it might be true. |

Maybe the dealer changed the oil for them at 5k and since they had no record of oil changes they figured it didn't happen. Hard to believe someone would be that stupid. |

You wanna talk about stupid..... Back in my younger days, I had a 76 charger with a 360 engine in it. I got it at 95000 miles, never changed the oil, the only time I added oil was when the low pressure light would come on during acceleration or braking. Through it all, that engine never missed a beat. To this day, I still maintain that the 360 was one of the best engines ever made. It had to be to put up with the crap I gave it. Contrast it to my 86 Laser. I babied that car. Changed oil every 3000 miles, always let the turbo cool, kept up on all maintenance etc. It thew a rod. Go figure. |

I have honestly heard horror stories like that. I actually had a coworker who wanted my old used oil so he could add it to his van when it got low. he said that was getting an oil change by adding different oil to it. Whether he was lying or not I'm not sure... knowing him, I kind of believe it. My sister hadn't changed the oil in her 72 cutlass for months on end, just kept adding a quart every other day or two. It's was actually good for it looking back, it constantly got fresh oil even though it was quaker sludge, I mean, state. Didn't burn any oil once I got ahold of it! |

My first car was a Chevette. it had an oil leak so I would add about a quart every other week but I never changed the filter. that engine lasted about 10k miles befor it seized. The sad part is the car wasn't worth putting a new engine in and I junked it with 40k miles on it. |

I put 40,000 on a 72 volkswagen bug with a cracked case. It leaked so bad I would add 1/2 quart every time I got in to drive it or every 100 miles which ever came first. Parked it in a different spot at work everyday hoping no one would notice the gigantic oil spot it would leave. bought the cheapest stuff I could find. Never had it at the full mark on the dipstick. Still running when I sold it. |

I've changed oil in a Subaru Forester with 125,000miles on it and still had the "Factory Installed" oil filter on it,the oil came out like, well it wasn't pretty. They guy actually got mad when I changed the filter since he did not want a filter, just oil. |

My dad, who is a bit of an odd character(cheap does not even describe him), never changes his oil. I always change it for him when I go to visit. The last lube job I did for him was on a Geo Prism, which had over 60k miles since the first time I did it. He always just adds oil as it gets low. That prism was given to my nephew and now has >300K miles and the engine runs like new. Go figure. |

My next door neighbor came over to borrow some tools to change oil in his BMW 330i. About an hour later I wandered over to see how it was going. For some reason I picked up the filler cap and took a look. It was very red/muddy looking so I asked him how many miles since he changed it. He told me this was the first time. 61k. It was still full though. ?? |

I had an '87 Chevy blazer with the FI 350 and decided that I wanted to replace the engine with a new crate eng putting out ~320 HP. Anyway, I caught hell from my wife about replacing a perfectly good eng...it only had 170,000 miles so I said OK, when it dies. I stopped changing oil and would just throw in 5 qts when the light came on. At 230,000 miles I gave up and sold it to by my Liberty CRD. The chap I sold it to (yes I told him about the oil) did change oil is is now at 300,000 waiting for it to die so he can put a new engine in. |

my first car was handed down to me... it was my grand father's then my dad's before it was mine. my Dad was not a big believer in doing or having maintance done to your car if it ran you were good if not it was time to do something or see someone. I had the car for a year and a half myself and my dad for about 3 years. it was a 76 dodge aspen with 225 inline slanted 6. I know he neve changed the oil, I did once and I know my gradfather god rest his sole took very good care of it. the only trouble with it was the carb. it ran ok till I was in an accident with it. my mom had a ford escort that they never changed the oil in and the other owners must have done the same with it. even with the oil full the oil pressure light would flicker at idle. I changed the oil and filter and that didn't help. I told my parents to take it and have the oil pan pulled and a new oil pump installed. they didn't and months later on the way home from Hershey medical Center the engine locked up on my mom. I was called to go see if I could fix it.... LOL I read it last rites and called a wreaker. then there is my younger brother that got another car I was hit in and totalled by insurance. he bought the car back and he and my dad titled it again so he had a cheap car. well the car had an oil leak that I never fixed it was not that bad had I told them. My brother never bothered to check or add oil untill one day the car would not start. he called me out I looked the car over and said you have no oil in it its toast. then my dad showed and decided it needs to go to the shop cus it cant be done for yet. at the shop they found no compression in all cylinders, he burned the rings out. Oh and Shawn is a trasmission mechanic now go figure. I learned very well from others what not to do and how to care for cars, I started taking better car of mine taking my grandfather's advise. I have not had an engine lock up or throw a rod on me yet. |
