Post subject:  sssssssssssss..POP! What the...no more turbo?!

Please let me know if anyone has been here before...

I was climbing a pass to leave Seattle, when about 2 miles form the top I hear about 10 seconds worth of hissing, then a loud "Pop!". All of a sudden I lost complete climbing power and had to drive the last 2 miles in 2nd gear at about 20 MPG. I seem to have zero turbo. Also when coming to a stop now, the jeep almost dies. The idle is very rough and varies in RPM. The Jeep even feels like it may lurch a bit.

We only have 37K on our 2005 CRD, so this does have me concerned. We tow a 3100# travel trailer twice a year (not on this trip) so I have not really worked this vehicle all that hard. This is my first diesel, so I am not sure if this lost of turbo was bound to happen.

1. Has anyone had this happen? If so, at what cost?
2. Is this too young for a motor like this to lose it's turbo?

I office out of the house is the main reason for the low miles. We also let the turbo idle at each location for at least 1 minute before turning off the Jeep (almost to an AR point).

Thank you,
Josh

Have you checked hoses? kind of sounds as if one might of split.

So, depending on what's happening, it might be really simple (but not particularly cheap) or it might be really expensive. When you have the engine going, do you still hear the turbo spool up, but just hear a gush of air when it kicks in (along with no change in power). If that's your symptom, then you probably lost either the intake side or the engine side intercooler hose. Mine split (2 inch crack right where it goes into the intake manifold) a couple weeks ago. New hose and 10 minutes and it was good as new. I ended up paying about 100 bucks for expidited shipping, but depending on which hose it is, that can cost you anwhere from 80-250 bucks to fix yourself (the high end being if you replace BOTH hoses).

Now, if you press the skinny pedal and nothing happens (i.e. no turbo spool-up or anything), then the turbo itself may have lost a bearing and siezed or similar, which is mui expensivo to fix. If that were the case, I'd get an upgraded turbo from green diesel engineering since mopar would probably charge even more for a lesser product.

Can you elaborate on the symptoms?

Dan

Thank you Ridenby,

In my haste on the side of I90, I did not see anything busted or split. However, I just now check and I see a spray of fluid right around my oil dipstick.

I should also note, that no warning lights have appeared on the dash during this time.

Thank you,
Josh

Check the bottom side of the hoses, often the hose will only open up under pressure of boost. This is where they usually fail. Good duct tape will provide some boost but it will leak. Order some Samcos, unless your still under warranty - they should be replaced under warranty. Then do something about keeping the oil out of your hoses (Provent or other CCV oil collection system). Good luck

Dan,

Yes, after closer look a large hose on the right side of the engine appears to have fallen off it's housing. I wish I was mechanically inclinded as this looks like a rather simple fix at this point. There is no whirl of turbo when I try to accelerate (the small pedal I am assuming ;)). I also do not see the clamp that would hold the hose in place, as at the other end.

When idling, I do hear an air leak type of noise. Not to sound any stupider than I probably already have, but would it be damaging to drive at this point? I am about 3 miles from the dealership where I plan on having this fixed.

thank you,
Josh

Teh 2005MY CRD had a poorly designed flange on the intake throttle where the CAC hose attaches to the engine. The clamp is on the side of the road back down the mountain.

2005 flange only provides about 3/4 inch material for the clamp to squeeze against. There is an indentation around the circumference of the flange. This is a bad design as it allows the hose to pull off easily after it has been soaking with oil for a few thousand miles.

In 2006, the flange was redesigned to be about 1 1/4 inches with a barb around the flange. The clamp for tightening the hose cannot slip past the barb, this is a much better design.

The dealer may only fix your issue temporarily, unless they can give you the adapter off the 2006 KJ CRD.

Assuming the hose you're talking about is is CAC (charge air cooler, or intercooler) hose, then you're in luck. One side pops up right in front of the turbo and goes to the intercooler right behind the radiator. The other leaves the intercooler in almost a mirror image and drops down under a few cables and hoses next to the battery and into the FCV (flow control valve, basically a big butterfly valve). A replacement stainless clamp isn't all that expensive and you can install/adjust/remove them with a simple flat-bladed screwdriver and some paper towels or rags to keep some of the hot stuff away from your skin.

If you HAVE to drive without two clamps, I'd take the one from the intercooler side of the hose (just behind the radiator) and move if the the engine side, simply because the intercooler side is easy to access if you need to fiddle with something or replace something later. I'd use a long zip-tie, string, really tight tape with crossed fingers, etc to get you from where you are to a parts store to buy a replacement clamp.

I'm still not sure if your turbo is intact, but if putting the hose back on and securing it reasonably resores performance, then you're probably okay. If the turbo is already gone, I doubt driving a couple more miles will make it more broken.

You may not want to drive it any farther, if the hose comes back off you can get unfiltered air to the engine.

Green Diesel,

Any chance you have a part number for the '06 throttle flange?

Thanks,

The throttle flange extension is P/N 5142813AA ($18.85 dealer/$14.46 moparpartsamerica.com). You will also need gasket P/N 5142613AA ($1.60 dealer/$1.24 MPA).

To install you need just to remove the 4 screws holding the throttle to the intake elbow, slide the gasket and extension over the throttle inlet, and then re-install the screws through the assembly and back into the elbow. It adds substantial holding power to the hose assembly and if you're vehicle doesn't have it, would be a wise addition.

If the dealer fix doesn't stay put, you can use different clamps. My Samco hose was sliding off and I used the Turbologic clamps (3/4" wide) that Boostcontroller sells here: http://www.boostcontroller.com/index.php?category=99

That wider clamp put an end to the slipping hose. $4 for that clamp ($16 for the whole set) might be a bit less expensive than a new flange.

Thanks Mr. Mopar! I'm going to order one and a gasket so that whenever the OEM hoses fail I can have the dealer install the new style flange at the same time when they do a warranty repair (so there's no downtime waiitng for the flange).

Thanks again,

I can't understand why the turbo hoses was not held on with t-clamps like turbo hoses should of been from the factory. I brought a set when I got my Samco, good investment

Maybe Chrysler was worried about using clamps worth more than the hoses. LOL

Just an FYI.

I had the repairs done. They only install the 2006 flange now, thankfully. Thanks to all that have provided feedback, advice and mods that I plan on doing.

Thank you,
Josh
