| Post subject: | usefulness of Factory Power Train Warranty? |
I am off to look at a member's CRD in Texas. If it looks good I hope to buy it next weekend and drive it 1000+ miles back to SE Utah where I am working. I read on the Jeep website that I can transfer the Power Train 70000 mile warranty over to me for $150. The CRD I am looking at has about 50000 miles. My question: How useful is this factory power train warranty for the major issues that are likely to happen to an 05 CRD? To ask another way, what major issues will the factory warranty NOT cover? Would it be worthwhile to add an extended warranty, which I think Jeep will still sell me? Thanks! |

all i can say is my front drive shaft failed on me and my cv driver side did also, got both replaced for $100 down payment and they fixed it up after that, works great now, but i asked if it was covered after i lift it, nope. I don't have a CRD, but its worth it, since you would have 20k more miles to go, thats a good year to two years of that service |

For $150 I'd do it. However, I didn't use my warranty coverage outside of the 3yr/36k bumper to bumper except for when my trans filter fell out for some reason. Its a piece of mind if you want to call it that. |

IMO it is worth $150, barely. It will only cover the issues the service department is smart enough to be able to fix. So far for me that has not been much of anything. If your transmission takes a dump, it will be handy. If you read the fine print it does not cover the diesel engine, that is a separate warranty. I would not get the other after-market warranties. You are better off putting $1000 in an emergency money market account with check cashing privileges and adding some cash here and there. The warranties have too many riders and conditions attached to be useful. I would instead take the once of prevention is worth a pound of cure route and spend some money on preventing issues from happening before they start (fuel system checkup, CAC hose checkup, replace the glow plugs with the new design, etc). |

Pablo... Another warranty for the engine? Please share details with me, privately if you feel the need. |

I would transfer the warranty, especially if you have a good dealership. Mine is currently being fixed for 100.00. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like transferring the warranty is a good idea. Does anyone know if getting the GDE tune would void the remaining Power Train warranty? Thanks! |

When I first got mine, I considered transferring the warrantee. When the dealer would not put in writing what was covered and what wasn't, I didn't feel good. Then I asked them to define just exactly what the "Power Train" was, they wouldn't. I left, kept my $150, and have never looked back. No good dealers in Phoenix, maybe where you live. My advice, have them put in writing what the "Power Train" is, and that would be a good start. |

Tim; My home is in Tucson, but I am working for the National Park Service in SE Utah in the middle of nowhere. The nearest dealer is Cortez, CO. I called and asked them if they had diesel techs and they said, "Sure, No Problem." Not sure how good they are, but they will be 100 miles away. Not sure where I will be when this assignment is over, either. BTW, I just called GDE and they confirmed that a dealership would not know anything about their flash. I was also impressed with their new "exchange" plan, where they mail you a ECU and you send them your old one. Way more convenient! |

FWIW, the EGR and associated gear is NOT covered under the factory power train warranty, which I don't get. |

7/70 is ONLY transferable to the SECOND owner and NOT all '05/'06 vehicles have the 7/70. You need a VIP report to be sure. |

I recently had the TCM go out on my 05 CRD. I have the GDE tune and they did not say anything to indicate that they even remotely noticed the tune. For $100 they covered the cost of a new TCM and a pinion seal was leaking that they fixed as well (about a day and 1/2 of labor in there too). What this dealer (about the 5th different dealer I have used) told me was that anything in the powertrain (engine, transmission, etc was covered). If it was not covered they would not begin work on it until I made a decision. I did not mention my lift nor did they. This is in California and they have very little experience with CRDs so maybe they are just ignorant. As far as the 7/70 what the dealer told me when I bought it was all 05s have the 7/70, but 06 it would be an option that you would have to pay for. For $150 I would say get it |

what warantee came with the 2006 Liberty CRD? I am just a few thousand over the 3/36,000 when I bought it. so does my jeep still have the 7/70,000 powertrain remaining? I have also seen someplace and I can not remember exactly where, edmonds car guide maybe that the CRD also had a 100,000 mile engine warrantee from VM, not sure if that is true. I never had my warrantee transfiered if I have one so if I do how do I get that done? |

I never had my warrantee transfiered if I have one so if I do how do I get that done? I confirmed with the dealer that my 05 was indeed a one owner and that I could transfer the remaining 7/70 powertrain warrenty - for $150 of course. If yours was already a second owner rig, bets would be that it would not be transferable. IIRC |

Wow I wonder why they dropped back for 2006. My jeep was a 1 owner, I am the second owner and I was not offered any thing other than the dealships standard used car warrantee. Oh well its ok as ling as I dont have issuse I cant fix with help or are going to cost me a bundle. I have a rainly day fund but hope I never need it for major emergency car repairs. |

When I bought mine Warranty guy at the dealership said that it would allow them to "reduce" the cost of the Jeep and make it more affordable. You could buy the warranty as an add on but that would bring the price back to the 2005 CRD price level. I never checked to see if that was true or not, I suspect that they kept the prices the same but just removed the warranty.... |

Prices were the same, they removed the warranty coverage b/c they realized the crap design of the ball joints and the potential of the torque converter failures. Expensive for them, but better to just ignore the problem and push the cost for their crap design onto the victi... Sucke... Uhm Customer. Even those who have proof (VIP report) on paper of the existence and validity of the 7/70 may not have it. If Chrysler's magic computer decides one day that you really DON'T have the 7/70, and changes the data... Poof. Your warranty is gone. Oh, prove that the warranty is removed with a valid reason? They don't have to, the computer says its not there, so it isn't. You have a hard copy of the VIP showing the warranty? "WHO GAVE THAT TO YOU? HOW DO YOU HAVE THAT PAPER? You have no warranty b/c the computer says you don't and you aren't supposed to have that paper." *click as they hang up on you* Yea... So you are probably not gonna get the coverage even if you did pay for it. Just accept and start saving your money to repair it yourself. |

Hmmm, paid $150 to transfer an 8yr, 80k Chrysler Corp extended warranty to me and I'm the third owner. So far they've bled the fuel system as to the stealer that 'repairs' the p0093 (I think) code of 'fuel leak'!! The CEL is on again so I'm headed back, I figure they'll get tired of seeing me and maybe actually replace the fuel line or at least the o-rings eventually... |
