He got scared it was going to sell for the opening bid amount, happens all the time but Ebay just won't police that kind of thing...

I kind of figured that, I could have had it for $8100 + shipping. I was looking at completed auctions, and noticed these vehicles are not bringing in the bids the sellers are looking for. I was going to sell my TDI if I were to win the CRD, I noticed even the TDI's are not moving very well in completed auctions?

I wouldn't think cars would go for top dollar on ebay considering you cant drive it and you don't know who your dealing with. If you're going to pay (or expect) top dollar, I'd think you'd want to do a live sale.

I think you may have a case to make with Ebay. The auction appears as if it was cancelled BEFORE any bids were made. However, you claim to have bid $8100 and imply that you were not the only bidder. I believe Ebay only allows a no reserve auction to be cancelled prior to any bids being made. (At least that's the way it used to be.) If you really bid $8100, I don't understand how the seller has been able to make it appear that he ended the auction BEFORE any bids were made.

There were about 10 bids, look at the bid history, it will show the auction was cancelled. As far as going after Ebay, do you think they really care, this seller makes them alot of money, they don't care about the buyers, they are a dime a dozen. If I did go after the seller through Ebay, would I really want to buy the vehicle under them circumstances any ways?

There have been some lawsuits about Ebay -
and it's a legally binding contract -
if you bid and can't pay - they can sue you
so if they cancel - without having a minimum reserve price -
you can also sue and force the sale

While that may be true, are you the type that has a lawyer already on retainer to file something like that? You also need to expend the effort to find the scumbag that canceled everyone's bids before dumping the auction, and with Ebay's "protect the personal information so only we can profit from it" attitudes, GOOD LUCK on that.

Its not worth it. Ebay got their money with the auction listing, they don't give a polished rats arse about the behavior of the seller or your supposed "contract" that you think you had to buy it. Maybe that language USED to have teeth, but not anymore. There is a reason why Ebay is becoming a ghost town for buying crap. Their constant fee increases for smaller sellers and the pish-poor treatment of those sellers in the face of deadbeat buyers is driving everyone away to Craigslist. Its better to do business in person anyway - MUCH less chance of being screwed when dealing in CASH, in person.

Yeah good luck sueing. I hate too say this but suck it up and move on.

I had a deal with buying a car on ebay once. I was winning bidder on a subaru GL-10 turbo sedan with low miles. this was in 2002 or 2003, anyway during the last two days of the auction the seller made his feedback private. I won with my bid. the guy then asks me to wire the moey and he would truck the car to me. I am in southern PA he was in Northern MD. in the auctoin he said he would accept a cashiers check. I said that I wanted to pick up the car since he was close by and would pay with a cashiers check upon seeing the car was as listed. I never head from the guy again and he never responded to emails. ebay did nothing but the car was listed the next week again. I am sure the deal was a scam in some way and he knew I was not going to be a sucker.

I would rather buy or sell somethings on craigslist and some on ebay. cars are one thing that Craigslist would be better for, people want the see the car, poeple want to deal face to face. then I have sold laptops and other things on craigs list. my experince has been its ok, you will get poeple that will email you and ask stupid questions that you answered in your ad and will waist your time. Craigslist is great for things that are too large to ship.

ebay is great for small electronics, computer parts and collectables.
