so i'm driving hoome from work when it feels like my PS pump quit.... get home and hope to find just the belt broken... i find NO alternator pulley... luckely it fell into the bottom of the engine bay... all the threads are stripped from inside the pulley... i bought this pulley about a year ago when the other one was squeaking... think i can get a replacement? |

is the alternator locked up? remember the belt tightens the pulley onto the alternator so stripped threads - sounds like the alternator seized and the pulley tried to keep turning. although I would expect belt friction to be the limiting factor - it's hard to strip out threads. |

ATXKJ... That was the first thing I checked... Alternator spins freely and easily.. I was amazed too when I saw the stripped threads.. I am wondering if I should just go with a new alternator just in case |

Alternator has an overrun clutch, Mine just went bad a couple of months ago, My mechanic had a heck of a time getting the big allen holding pulley off, Works fine now. |

Mine went out about a year ago and they replaced the entire alternator assembly since it was more work to take it all apart and there was likely a problem with the clutch anyway, not just the pulley. You may have the same thing going on. |

JEEP or aftermarket decoupler? Then material failure could also be a factor.... dgeist wrote: they replaced the entire alternator
That is rediculous. Change the decoupler: 10 minutes and $60 part. Change the entire alternator....$500? |

$500 for an alternator? Who in the hell designed these things? What makes our alternator any different from the garden-variety Delco POS that is on the older ZJ series? I had to replace 3 of those in a row b/c of crappy rebuilt parts. Sounds like ours are the same quality, but at 10 times the cost. Thoughts as to why? I've always heard that it was the EUROPEAN cars that were "so expensive for parts to repair" yet it seems that this CRD is the worst offender. My VW had its share of problems, but perversely enough... The parts were cheaper! |

Sounds like they are not getting put on tight enough and the resulting movement is tearing up the threads |
