| Post subject: | EGR Codes! What to do? |
I've got a 2006 unmodified CRD limited that is now showing check engine light off and on. Got about 57k miles on it (bought it last Oct at 36k) I took it to Bill Luke as I had seen them recommended on this board for Jeep repair in general and CRD's in particular. Service writer was Earl Gould. They told me the CEL was from EGR codes and that the issue was likely carbon buildup in the EGR valve that may or may not go away. I am reading on this board about "elephant hose" and "provent" mods as well as some sort of engine control computer reprogramming from Green Diesel. What is my best bet for resolving this problem? I have limited mechanical experience and do not have the tools or space at the moment (live in apt complex that prevents auto work on premises) to do much of my own work on it. I see where some people have removed EGR valve, taken solenoid off and cleaned EGR. Is this something a dealer service center will do or would I be better off taking it to independent diesel mech for this? |

don't know why I said 2006 in above post, CRD is 2005. |

The EGR is a Federal Emission control - the Dealer will only touch it to put it back to stock, and most Independents will be hesitant to touch it. . The SEGR and GDE tune modify the EGR function without causing a CEL - the ORM will modify function causing a CEL. (and since they modify EGR function they are 'Off Road Use' but these are Jeeps) The EHM and Provent - keep the crankcase vent from blowing oil into the intake - the ProVent would be legal in all states and Ford dealers will install them on Powerstrokes - don't know if any Jeep dealers would know what it is. normally funtioning EGR's get clogged up with exhaust carbon- often they can be removed and cleaned in solvent. - Dealer will probably just put in a new one. (it's not unusual for the FCV to have problems with the EGR - I think it has to be replaced) |

The GDE tune will solve the EGR issue by deactivating it without a CEL. The cost of the tune is less than the cost of having the dealer replace the valve, plus performance and economy is greatly improved. |

Will the vehicle still pass smog with the GDE tune installed? |

If you don’t have a CEL light on, yes you will pass in AZ. They will do a visual under the vehicle looking for a cat, so even if it is “Declawed” it will still pass. All the diesel test is looking for lot's of black smoke. No smoke, no problem. |

Hey Turbo Tim- Does not Arizona plug into the vehicle if the diesel has a plug (1996<newer)to check for codes/run tests like a gasser or is it that traditional step on the go pedal and run that black smoke opaque test like on the older diesels-the five year grace period is up in 2010 for the 2005's and 2011 for the 06's and I have 2 06's! Sorry, but I don't know what they're going to do. My 99 Cumins is just floor it and watch for smoke. I'm a cheap weasel and have mine registered up North. I am not going to play their games. Charge me $35 to tell me I don't have black smoke? The state can kiss my tail pipe! For the rest of you poor people out there in AZ, let us know what kind of crap you have to go through. (By the way, one could always put it in 4X4 and disconnect the handle and they will just have to give you a pass! Too bad the dyno is not a Four wheel Dyno). |
