| Post subject: | low coolant/low oil |
Fathers CRD's low coolant light has been coming on lately( just with initial starts in morning them shuts off after a minute) Fill canister is a little low. Haven't seen any signs of external leaks, doesn't seem to steam out the exhaust(been cold the last few mornings) doesn't really smell anything in the cab like sometimes you can with heater core issues. Also went to check oil and there was no oil on the dipstick, had to add about a quart just to get it back to the min. line. Normally changes oil every 5000 miles never notice low oil b/4. The oil analysis has been really great lately so we decided to run out to 8500 miles with this oil change so there is more miles on this oil then normal. In there a link between the two? should i bring it in for a leak down test? Thanks for any suggestions. Seems to be running/idling just fine. |

It is common for a lot of CRDs to have the low coolant light come on this time of year. Over the course of the spring and summer, a small amount of water evaporates from the reservoir. As the night time temps drop, the engine block and components contract, causing a larger volume in the cooling system. Just put 500ml of distilled or deionized water back into the tank and all will be well. You should really check your oil more often between changes. Every 1000 miles is a good frequency. Depending on the kind of oil, there is always some loss between changes. I loose about a quart in 10k miles. It may be related to breakdown and volatilization, or burning off of the cylinder walls. Few long continuous trips will use far less oil than many cold starts and short trips. |

Thanks for the reply, he needs to rotate tires so tomorrow he is bringing it in for that and they said they will do a quick pressure test just to make sure. But your explanation makes good sense. Oil change this weekend and we will have to keep a closer look at oil levels next time around. Has always been good up to 5000 miles but i don't think it was check much during the extra 3500. Thanks again. |
