| Post subject: | fuel economy drop |
I have been noticed a drop in my fuel economy the last few weeks. when I bought it in August I was gettin around 18 or 19 around town and seen as much as 27 on a highway trip. Then for nearly a month I was gettin 20 to 21 around town. Now My EViC is reporting 17.2 |

Cleaning the MAP is a good place to start. When you bought it, did you put in all new fluids and filters? You never know how good a routine maintenance job the previous owner did... |

Is this your first diesel Every fall in the cold states they "winterize" the fuel to prevent it from gelling. They use kerosene with diesel and kerosene has less btu's per gallon so we get less MPG's |

Definitely check your air filter...a diesel is just a huge air pump... |

Good answers so far. If it is in fact your fuel, you can add a cetane buster such as power service to try and help raise your mpg... |

How does a cetane buster work? |

A cetane buster is just like a octane buster for petrol cars.... |

It's mainly temperature and fuel formulation. Here is my consumption since new. You can clearly see the seasonal variation. |

So it will lower the cetane? |

No, the cetane booster will raise the cetane level. Diesel is rated just like regular gas. It has a value that is usually between 40 ~ 50 and can be as high as 60 if using bio diesel. |

Ok, I was wondering what you meant by Buster? I use the power service my self once the temps start dropping below 20. Just picked up a case of it yesterday at Fleet Pride. |

Anything less is garbage. But on this side of the pond, all we get is Garbage. That way the older ORT can keep going with out a flash on the electronic engines and a timing retard on the others. Chip tuners like GDE, Inmotion and others advance the timing to compensate for the garbage we get at the pumps. Do the ORM or SEGR to get more oxygen into the cylinders and provide a Virtual Cetaine booster for your engine. Other Cetaine Boosters and Bio or Bio blends help too. |

Cetane Increases cause diesel fuel to ignite easier/quicker whereas Octane Boosters keep gasoline from igniting too early. They each take the fuel (Diesel or Gasoline) a different direction. One increases detonation tendencies(cetane) and one decreases detonation tendencies(octane). |

I do know it was serviced by the dealer mostly oil changes inspection and some warranty work. I did an oil change labor day weekend and put in a new fuel filter. I put in an amsoil air filter a month ago. I do use diesel clean every few fill up too. |

well I found something I don't like now. I will have to put a cetane booster in now and see about what it takes to clean my map sensor. its down to 32 tonight aready but the weather man says its going to warm up some for a few days so maybe I will feel like trying that. I didn't say so before but YES this is my first Diesel. |

OK can someone point me to info on how to clean the MAP? I know I seen it here some place but now I can't find it? do I need any cleaners like carb spray or something too? |

In the winter, you can also make a grill block or use a grill blanket to keep the engine at warmer temps.
On the driver's side you can see two silverish blocks and on the passenger's side you can see one and in the second slot is my air intake "scoop". This means only the three middle slots are open. I am in Texas so I leave that many open...in colder temps, you could probably close one or two more. |
