Post subject:  Is this normal? 4wd question

Yesterday I was messing with the 4 wheel drive and noticed something. I was at a stop and placed the vehicle into 4 pt. I then drove it about 20 feet straight, then I made a left turn (fairly sharp) but was slow. It made a loud CLUNK but operated normally. I could feel the tires as they were making traction as they are suppose to. I then stopped and placed it back to normal 2wd. I again made turns left and right at slow speeds and the tires did not disengage out of 4wd as they were still gripping like they were in 4pt. Only until I drove straight and got to about 10-15mph, would it seem to go back to 2wd and I could make a turn without the traction of 4wd. Is this normal? It does have the Selec-trac 4wd.

Yes this is normal. A few people will agree with me on this when I say that the senor in the T-case isnt really that great when it comes to 4wd...I put mine in 4-lo one day and I couldnt get it out for a good 20min after I disengauged it. This happens often and its nothing to be worried about

What type of surface were you driving on? Pavement/Dirt/ Rock?
Was there snow/ice/water?

It was dry payment. I am selling the vehicle and we were just going through all the gears to make sure everything was working correctly when this occurred.

Don't put it in 4wd part time on dry pavement... you can explode the Tcase
4wd FULL time is okay on pavement... I think.. (I don't have full time so.?)

When I use Full Time 4wd, and need out of it, I put it in N, then R and let it roll back at idle, and then back into D. If I don't, I get what you got.

something like that happend to me last week. I was in full time cus I was driving in heavy rain I parked and 2 hours later it was not raining so I backed out of my space and went forward then shifted to 2wd . I was not moving very fast when I did it. when I went to pull out on to the street there was clunk from the center of the vehicle.

never drive on drive pavement in 4 wheel pT

when and if you do sell your CRD be sure to tell the new owner about LOST

putting it in Neutral while rolling ~5 mph works fairly well
occasionally stopping and backing up a bit will help

basically the front and rear axles aren't turning exactly the same - could be tire wear /pressure ect
and so there's a bit stress that prevent the gears from disconnecting.

yep. Doesn't the manual recommend having the vehicle moving while doing this?

I know on most 4x4's you even need to shift the transmission into neutral before shifting into low.

I thought the system was designed to shitft on the fly in all rages but low up to like 60 MPH

my tires are only a few weeks old so I doubt tire ware had anything to do with it for me.

I have nly been in low range one time I shifted trans in to netural and then shifted transfer case through neutral and in to 4 low . from 2wd to 4 part time up to full time I didn't think shifting to neutral was needed.

i just put the tranny in neutral when i am rolling whether i am shifting into 4 or out of 4, it just seems to work better on all the vehicles i have driven.

Even if they are exactly the same size (unloaded), wear pattern, and inflation pressure, the KJ is uneven weight front to rear, so the front and rear axles are not spinning exactly at the same rpm.
