Post subject:  Yet Another Coolant Question.....

I’m so confused. At the risk of starting yet another which Anti-Freeze is best war, some plain English would be appreciated.
Supposedly we had originally G-05 stuff. “Some” say that ELC (Extended Life Coolant) is better. G-05 is made with SCA’s for diesels already blended in so it minimizes cavitation.
ELC’s, (as in Dex-Cool) do they need SCA’s added in?

I have spent way too many hours reading so please, some expert clear this up for us.
There are a bunch of us coming up on the 100K mile parts-swap-out and fluid changes so this information would be great to have.

I have also noted that Wally World, Autozone, Checker (O’Reilly Auto Parts, etc., do NOT carry the G-05 stuff. NAPA and Car Quest does.

ELC's do not need SCA's added in to them. However, each manufactures specified ELC, such as Caterpillar's ELC, GMC's Dexcool, & Chryco's G-05 have specific additive packages within the SCA package that meets that manufactures specification.

Hope this helps...

Also, I could have sworn that vatozone carried it. At least the one by my house does...

You need HOAT coolant, which Zerex GO5 is.Dexacool is a OAT coolant and the 2 do not mix,all of those "universal" and "all makes" coolants are all OAT coolants and in my opinion should be banned since all they do is eat gaskets and form sludge.

g-05 is not an elc. Dexcool is not an elc.
the best coolant is a ELC pick your poison.
cat cummins rotella, whatever.
g-05 is fine.
elc is > fine.
read other posts.

If it gets cold where your at, an elc is not great. <-40

Both in bold are ELC.

This is why I would never go to Firestone.

Elc's don't use silicates, nitrates, borates, or phosphates. And have a significantly lower TDS value over other coolant types.

Elc's are 600k mile fluid, with one recharge at 300k, that requires no sca monitoring, and lives for 6 years.

Conventional eg and pg coolants would require 20 + recharges of sca to hit it's 2 year life, plus god only knows how many tests.

Elc's have much better thermal transfer than conventional coolants.
Elc's promote significantly longer water pump lifespan
ELC has increased corrosion prevention
and cavitation protection
elc can not gel or sludg up like other coolants, no silicates ot fall out of suspension

elc's have a better high temp performance than eg and pg coolants.

g-05 is a excellent coolant in comparison to other coolants, except for a real ELC.

In a parent bore disposable engine i guess dexcool seems like a good choice.
