| Post subject: | Transmission question please |
I got up early here in Seattle yesterday. The temps were probably in the low 40's. As I merged onto the freeway the transmission wouldnt shift into 5th gear. Normally around 62 mph she shifts into fifth. No go this time. It took around 15 minutes driving before she would finally shift into 5th gear. Is it a temperature thing? 50,000 miles on the truck. The trans was services less than 20,000 miles ago when the Suncoast converter was put in. I guess Im looking for ideas and whether anyone else has experienced this. Thanks. I hope there is nothing wrong with the transmission. |

It is my understanding that when the trans is still cold, it will not shift into lockup. However, it should be warmed up within 5 minutes of driving if it was parked outside overnight at 40 degrees. |

5 min. Is about what mine takes. More so on the colder days in the winter. |

Yep, it won't shift into overdrive until the trans hits a certain temp. Nothing to worry about. |

At least 10 mins when it's really cold up here. |

Happened to me a couple days ago too, when it was 42 degrees overnight and raining. Cold as a... |

As for the tranny - what they said ^^ Joe - I notice your sig now mentions a bypass filter - did you post a picture? |

Not to confuse things but also when the transmission fluid is over temperature it won't shift above 3rd (TC locked up, both 4th and 5th are OD ratios) too It's clearly stated in the owner's manual |

Thanks everyone. I guess it was more like 5 - 10 minutees before she shifted. Yesterday I plugged her in all night and I did t have that problem after that. AT, I have the kit but I haven't installed the bypass yet. I should probably take I off the sig. |

I don't know if you need to start plugging it in at 40 deg. It's a normal function of the trans to warm the fluid. Your electric bill may be more than the cost of extra fuel in higher RPM for 5 min. My Subaru was the same. I live in Michigan and I've plugged my KJ in less than 50 times. Just my 2 cents |

I just want pic's when you do. With what you've done on the Cruiser and Sami I'm expecting the CRD to be really impressive when you're ready to start tweaking |

I'm probably going to start plugging it in here in Virginia soon if it gets much colder. It just makes it easier to start. I have a heavy-duty outdoor timer, so it doesn't run all night, but the nice thing... My electric is included in my rent. |

Screw the timer......let the landlord keep your CRD snug as a bug under a rug. |

A block heater in Virginia? Ok then. I only use mine when it's sub 20 deg F. I need to look into a timer. I guess that's the only thing holding me back is the electric bill. To be honest, I'm not even sure how much of a dent it makes. |

The engine also takes longer to warm up with the ORM or SEGR because the EGR isnt heating up the coolant. Much longer. Opps I change my profile. I'm no longer a resident of Delaware. |

I like plugging her in. I dig quick warm ups. |
