I've had a clacking sound at the top of the engine, while idling ... I'm about 99.9% sure it's one of the hydraulic lifters ...
I've opened up the cam cover, but all the lifters "looks" fine to me ... I inspected all of the rocker-arms where they make contact with the valve ...no abnormal markings .... I've squeezed all the lifters with my hand, and some of them had oil coming out of them quite easily, and some had less oil, but none the less they at least had SOME oil coming out when squeeezing the lifter by hand .... are there any other way to test which lifter is not working properly???? :?:

Thanx in advance ...

If you remove them and none are collapsed and you are able to squeeze oil out of them, then they are working. Good lifter can clang if oil pressure is low. Usually the loss of oil pressure is some where else.

Are the lifters easy to remove?
Do you need a special tool to remove the lifters?

Thanx in advance.

Hi welcome to the forum, read the noob guide for a bunch of helpful information.

To answer your question, no they are not easy to remove, and while to get everything apart to remove them you don't need special tools, you will need special tools to put the engine back together.

The timing belt must come off, the engine harness moved out of the way, and the whole intake/valve cover must come off to get to them. Quite the job, expect 6-7 hours for teardown alone.

Hi,
My engine is already open, rockers are broken and lifter are stuck in the cylinder head.
Do i need a special tool to remove the lifters?
The lifters are not rmoving, so i think that is why my rockers broke.
can not pull them out.
So anyone any suggestions?

Big pliers to rotate them a bit and loosen them up, maybe some penetrating lube would help.

I use to some fishermans style needle nose to grab partially broken ones left in the head. vise grips also work good to grab the head or shoulder and just pull upward, adding some rotation always helps loosen them up. Twist and twist then try pulling up.
