Post subject:  Powertrain Warranty

Does anyone know if glow plugs are covered by powertrain warranty? Dealer says I have 2 bad ones and not covered by 7/70. I'm at 67k. I really really thought they were covered.

This is EXACTLY why I never bought or transferred the warrantee. They won't put in writing just exactly what a "Power Train" is.
They are all smiles and glad to take your money but when it's time for them to pony-up, good luck.

Hope you win this one but since glow plugs (and any other part of the Jeep) are not in the magic undisclosed Power Train list, you probably will have to pay. If so, go somewhere else that works on diesels. Don't walk, RUN away from the dealer!

Dealer is most likely WRONG. When I had a glow plug go out, I had to pay the 100.00 deductible per the Power Train Warranty (I was already passed bumper to bumper). My dealer ran this through Chrysler, and they (Chrysler) paid the dealer, so it must be a warranty item.

I did ask them what's included in the power train, they told me all internally lubricated parts. That would seem to exclude the glow plug, and include the Injector Pump. But they cover the Glow Plug, and when I asked if the IP was covered, I got a very definite NO.

I had one go bad and it was not covered by the powertrain warranty. The dealer got all huffy when I asked them to define the powertrain. I asked if they had anything in writing that listed what the powertrain warranty covers, and they did not.

Post subject:  Grey Areas in contracts

I have spent sometime talking to a couple of lawyers about contracts and ambiguity as of late. The neat thing under US law is if there is anything in a contract that is ambiguous it is the author of the contract that will bear all responsibility for such ambiguities (i.e. you can't write a crappy gray area contract then hide behind it, the court systems will nail you to the wall). If I can get a the legal code reference for this I will but it may take some time.

Hope this little nugget is helpful,

Groo2

When I asked the same question, I was told that the powertrain warranty covered everything needed to make the car move. They wouldn't give me anything to that effect either, but I did specifically ask about the plugs and the injection pump, and was assured that both were covered.

However, Chrysler Corporate decided on December 24th last year that I was no longer worthy of having a warranty, because their computer said I didn't have one. The fact that I had a copy of the VIP report that PROVED that I had the 7/70 only served to incite them to yelling and demanding how I had come by such a piece of paper... Never once denying the validity of it, but also flatly ignoring it. Their computer decided that I had no warranty, so phluck off customer-boy.

The dealer's rep was also quite displeased with their treatment of both him and I during the 2 hours he spent on the phone trying to clear this up... And Chrysler Corporate was absolved of any responsibility when they became Chrysler Fiat.

I will maintain this vehicle myself to a higher standard, and will NEVER own another mopar product again because of their complete ABSENCE of after-sale quality.

The power train warranty covers any lubricated part in the powertrain.

Pistons, rods,,camshaft, rocker rollers, turbo, waterpump, cranckshaft, trans internals,t-case internals,F/R diff internals,CV joints, drive shaft u-joints,and stuff like that.Glow plugs are not lubricated and is part of the starting system which is not covered under the powertrain warranty.

Real diesels don't need glowplugs

"real diesels don't use glow plugs"

Yeah they use intake grid heaters, or portable 50k btu heaters.
or PDU's that pre heat the coolant.

And automatic ether injection.

zomg, glow plugs work better.

Thanks everyone, where's a good place to get them, looks like I'll be doing them myself. Has anyone done them? Any gaskets needed for the anti shudder valve (can't remember the right name just now) or anything else needed? Tigafila

You should not need any new gaskets for parts removed to gain access to the glow plugs. Which cylinders have bad plugs? You should verify the resistance of each failed plug, sometimes the glow harness was installed backwards from the factory. There is a white mark on one end of the glow harness, it should be next to the #1 cylinder glow plug. The resistance of a good plug is around 0.7 to 1.2 ohms, bad is very big number.

Glow plug PN: 5142577AA, it should be available at www.moparpartsamerica.com or through NAPA.

Good luck.

Thanks GDE for that good information.

Note that there has been some issues with glow plugs and the computer calibration on just exactly how the ECU controls them.
Also GDE posted a while back about which Glow Plug Calibration you may or may not have.
There is a sticker on your ECU for the engine (drivers side under the hood on the fender well), and the number on the ECU will tell you what software revision you have. Some older Jeeps may want the newer glow plug update.
Be ware if you do not have the bad F37 update, you will probably end up with it.
I don't have the link to those numbers, but hopefully GDE will point them out again for us.

Thanks everyone, I know there has been a lot of issues with correct glow plugs and calibrations. So the correct pn for my '05 is definitely 5142577AA? How do I check/correct the calibration? Great help, thanks, Tigafila

The calibration issue is with the flash level that's in the ECM. You can't count on dealers putting update tags on. The flash level is the last 2 letter part of the part number as read by a scanner. There's listings in the CRD TEC area

I have a vag-com (for VW's) and am in Grandview and can read the part numbers of your ECM and TCM for you.

pmail me if you want.

Joe
