| Post subject: | CRD recs. after ORM and EHM? |
I have an 06 CRD LTD with 60,000 mi. I purchased it in Indiana, in May 07 with 14,000 mi with all recalls already done, including engine reflash and torque converter change. From 22,000- 32,000 mi, it had the following services done; ERG valve replaced, Mass Air Flow sensor replaced and Boost Pressure Sensor replaced. At 51,000 mi. it blew an inner cooler hose. I've been following this site since I acquired this vehicle and have been cleaning my MAF sensor and changing air, fuel, oil, etc on a regular basis. About 5,000 mi ago my CEL came on and sure enough, it indicated EGR problems. So I decided to perform the ORM and EHM at that time. I am currently not using a Provent or any other mod on the EHM at this time. I have been reading about some options now available to cure some of the issues above and turn off the CEL while enhancing drivability and economy while maximizing engine life. What do you recommend I do at this point? I love my CRD and want to keep it for a long while! I appreciate your efforts and this site! |

Since you plan on keeping your CRD long term and are on your second egr valve already consider the GDE tune that makes your CRD run like it should have and as a bonus you'll see better mileage. Mine is up around 5 mpg in all three driving conditions. (city, highway and towing a 3500# travel trailer are 24, 28, and 20 Then install a provent. |

I have a ProVent, the SEGR kit, and the GDE tune, and I recommend all of them. They're all good for different things. ProVent is a natural choice, it's just a little pricey for a filter. No matter what you do to filter the CCV, remember to use lines that will stand up to oil (fuel lines or similar). Otherwise you'll end up with a nice mist of oil in your engine bay in a year or so when the hoses start to go. The GDE tune has been great for economy and responsiveness and has other nice benefits like making the fuel gauge more accurate and making the accelerator pedal more progressive. The SEGR is good if you want to make the EGR do NOTHING. As far as anyone knows (including GDE), having it will not detrimentally affect the GDE (as the tune doesn't know it's not there) and you get the added piece of mind of not having to replace the EGR if/when it dies. Put in the Provent, it will clean up your intake tract considerably. At some point you might want to think about cleaning the intercooler since all that stuff has been building up in there. From a performance point of view (enhancement) I have found that junking the old restrictive bus muffler and ball flange and putting in a full 2 1/2" Magnaflow system to be a very good investment. Its a relatively low cost way to get better performance, and better economy (and love that turbo whine). If your into enjoying the sounds, then the Airflow snorkel is another great investment. The airflow will improve intake breathing (of course giving you a water proof airbox as well if you seal things properly) and it allows you to hear the turbo vanes feathering. Coupled with the Magnaflow a veritable symphonic delight. |

Sounds like the GDE option is the best one long term. The SEGR would be fine too, but it sounds like it may be just as invloved and expensive, i'm looking for least of everything here as far as those 2 things go. Based on what i'm reading on here, it seems that there is a split of opinion as to whether to keep the EHM or leave it factory. I can see where the most critical mod to engine life/ perf. is the ORM. What do you guys think? Should I leave the EHM as is or reconnect it? I really don't want to do the provent thing and if it's arguable as to the benefits of that mod, then I'd just as soon leave it factory. I do pull bass boats with my Libby, so I'm not off roading or looking to maximize perf. that way. I also would like to go the cleanest rout as far as oil dripping goes as well. |

Just keep a roll of duct tape handy or an extra set of hoses |

If you want even simpler, you can replace everything from the flange that starts to restrict the stock one back to where the output tube bends up to go over the axle with a section of 2.5" tube (with a new flange at the front for servicing, of course. The lack of a muffler removed a great deal of the unnecessary backpressure and bumped up my fuel economy a bit as well as resulted in slightly more responsive turbo-spool (the local muffler charged me about $100 for the parts and labor (about 1 hour).
