Have any of you Canadian members here got the GDE tune. I would really like to go this route but shipping, import/customs issues, delays etc. are putting me off somewhat. What was your experience getting the ECU across the border, what carrier did you use, what are the pitfalls and what to watch out for e.g. what paperwork do you need so that they don't end up trying to charge you taxes/duties on the entire value of the ECU in either or both directions.

I think a short drive south to Michigan would be easier...maybe cheaper...and a trip to boot.

Just get it shipped to mailbox service in the US and have them call you when it comes and go pick it up. They charge about $5 for the service. I usually try to combine it with a shopping trip into the US.

I had GDE do the shipping and it came through Canada Post. There was a custom charge when I picked it up at Canada Post and it was less than $20. The shipping went really smooth and the total time from order to receipt was less than a week.

You can always go for the swap, then you will have the piece of mind, that your Jeep will be ready to roll no matter what happens with the shipping.

If I may,

Since you're in the Ottawa region, how about going for the swap but have it delivered, say, to Ogdensburg NY's UPS store. You can have them notify you upon receive, make a short drive down there (~100km), pick it up, swap it in the parking lot (a few tools, perhaps?), put the original in the same box and ship it back to GDE right away, and voilĂ , you're done :D ! Plus, it gives you the excuse to do some shopping around, while you are there.

Just as a word of advice, do not mention picking up something at the border. You're only going for a little shopping spree

I just did that last spring to pick up a front diff for my previous vehicle (Tracker), and it was well worth the trouble, considering the alternative (~$300 instead of $950 from the local "steal"yard).

And I too am looking at the GDE tune, most probably late spring '10, and will go for the same procedure as well...

Anyway, I'd sure like to get your impressions if you decide to go for the tune

Great suggestion Eh! I had thought about using the UPS store but couldn't get past how to get it through customs. For some reason I didn't see the exchange it in the car park and bring it across as part of the vehicle option. Ogdensburg is about a 40 minute drive for me.

Eh, I'm located near the Ontario/Quebec border (QC side) and I go to Ogdensburg quite often. You could also go to the Akwesasne Mohawk casino and try to win your purchase (if not, the food and the booze are cheap), go to Massena to Autozone and get a few goodies, then go to Walmart located in front of the Autozone to get some cheap engine oil (5w40, 1 gal, 19usd), then, if you're due for a transmission maintenance, you can go to the Malone Walmart where they actually stock the Valvoline ATF+4 (not in Massena though). Very interesting trip for your CRD. Don't forget to fuel up in Akwesasne (Bear's den is great) before you come back. Have a nice trip!!!!
