| Post subject: | Off Topic Engine Question |
My brother in law has an old 70's Nissan forklift with a four cylinder engine (propane). He has water in the oil, is there any way of finding out where it is getting in. He said it has good compression on all cylinders. He does have to top off the coolant every so often. The spark plugs have some water and rust in them. Any ideas would be great, could it be a gasket? Anybody know of a good resource for info on this engine? |

I took a quick look at that. It seems like the engine needs to be running for that test to work. It doesn't seem that there is oil in the radiator fluid. Also he doesn't use any antifreeze in the coolant, it typically doesn't freeze here in sacramento and he stores it in his wharehouse. |

Just because there isn't oil in the radiator does not mean exhaust gasses are not in the radiator. |

Put a compression gauge on each cylinder in turn and do a bleed down test. This should identify which cylinder has the problem. You will have to pull the head to fix it. Isn't there a forklift forum? |

One place that people forget to check is the cavity behind the water pump. If it is aluminum and if they don't change (or use) anti-freeze it will eat a hole in the pump housing. |

don't know about a Nissan - but on the CRD there's a oil/water - oil cooler mine blew a gasket there and leaked oil into the coolant |

If its a non turbo engine I would be looking at the head jasket. that is one of the most comman ways water gets in the oil for most engines in general. |
