Replaced the transmission and torque converter in the CRD on Xmas day. Looks like the fluid slowly leaked out and I had no idea. Mom gives me a call during finals week, "the transmission temp light has been coming on recently after I've been driving for awhile." Long story short, the thing just cooked, got WAY hot, burnt the fluid up(was refilled after we discovered it low). The good news is that the new torque converter and used transmission were $220 and $860 respectively. $1080 and 1.5 days worth of work is cheaper and better than the $1800 it would have taken to fly the family down to south texas to visit the family there that would spend the entire time fighting and making life miserable. This was MUCH better than that. Thank you transmission failure. |

What torque converter did you go with? I live in Fort Collins, and I have the complete tool kit if you ever need anything. Did you replace your cooler when you did the trans? |

I went with the new "Euro" Torque converter, $220 at my pricing from the dealer. I did not replace the cooler, just flushed through the lines. I might hit you up for that toolkit. I think I will replace the TB on the CRD engine I am swapping into my comanche while everything is off and easy to get to. And ya, I;m in fort collins too, whereabouts do you live? I know of a red CRD that lives not too far from me a little north of drake between shields and taft. CATCRD is also in fort collins. |

Sam, good to hear that you made the best of a difficult situation. I wonder if the trans would have been saved with a faster response or whether once the overheating light comes on its too late. That is one light I keep an eye on when towing and have not seen it yet. I have the original TC and wonder if and hope that it will last a long time. Since you have the new TC please post your observations of any changes from the original part. |

I'm sure the trans would have been saved with a faster response, as is it got overheated, repeatedly, before any action was taken. Hard to say if the new TQ is really all that different, it maybe feels like it locks up sooner, but there is also a new tranny in there which can make it feel different. |
