I have noticed the smell of crankcase gases when starting my engine in the mornings. The only problem I have with that is that I recently installed (or, more truthfully, KJ 119 installed ) a Provent, which is supposed to ELIMINATE that, correct? I used to have an EHM, so I am familiar with the smell of escaping crankcase gases - that's definitely what it is.So what is going on here? I drained the Provent last oil change (about 2000 miles ago) after waiting too long before and having collected oil leak out in my garage. Did I damage something? I pulled the thing out, pulled out the element, etc - but can find no evidence of a split or anything. After the engine warms up it seems to go away, because idling in my garage in the evening after driving home does not smell at all. |

I don't think the provent, is going to stop the smell. I thought it just caught the vapor, to keep it from dripping on the ground. |

The Provent is an oil-condensing filter that is installed in-line of the CCV-to-intake plumbing. It is a closed system designed to condense the oil mist contained in the crankcase gases and collect it for seperate drainage and disposal, while still allowing the gases to flow through to the intake, as the EPA intended. So therefore I should not smell crankcase gases (or so I thought) since it is part of a closed system. Anybody? Is the emergency bypass valve on my Mann-Hummel Provent not functioning properly? What part of it do I need to look at to determine if it is functioning correctly? |

I didn't realize that the provent was still a closed system? |

Sort of, the Provent has a valve that releases @ about 2 lbs pressure. So it can vent to the atmosphere if it has to. I sometimes smell fume emissions when starting up but not after that. Very glad to have the Provent saves a lot of crappy oil getting into the turbo but lets vapor through. |

I knew about the release valve, but not sure what part it is on the thing. Do you know? And at least someone else out there is experiencing the same thing. Thought mine might be defective. |

check the drain hose and see if it's bumping the exhaust. FYI the pressure release is the small button thing on the top with a small spring inside pushing it closed. |

I have it on the intake side, so no exhaust problem. Thanks for the info on the relief valve location. I will open the hood and look at it the next time I start it cold. |
