So yesterday as you know I bought another CRD. This one is a 2005 with 75,000 miles on it. It ran pefect on the 250 mile drive home. It ran perfect this morning. Then I jumped in it this afternoon and it ran like crap. Keep surging over and over again...fall on it's face, then take off, then fall on it's face, then take off... zero power....black smoke rolling out the back....loud WHOOSH of air noise coming from underhood each time the surge would kick in and it would fall on it's face... So I had a mechanic look at it and we unplugged the connector to the EGR servo and the problem was still there. He says that the EGR could be clogged up, and therefore is staying closed. Does that sound right to you guys?? Coming back to the CRD world is suddenly not going well for me. If it is the EGR, are these expensive? Hard to repair? Are they still on national backorder like they were when I had my first CRD 3 years ago?? |

These are classic signs of a burst intercooler hose. Pull off each one and check it thoroughly. If the previous owner did nothing to remedy oil in the intake, then they should be coated inside and out with oil. (out because the oil eventually seeps through the rubber) Chances are you will find a split in one or both hoses. Clean them real good, use some gorilla tape to limp through until you get your replacements, and log onto Turbo Warehouse and order you a set of Samcos. |

Check for air in the fuel head by pushing the priming button. If it's firm then no air but if it's soft then it needs bled |

I took the fuel filter off, drained it completely, reinstalled it, primed the system...and then drove the Jeep and the issue is still there. So it's not air or water in the fuel. So this could be a split CAC to EGR hose? I didn't think about that because visually the hose looked OK...but maybe I should look in more detail. |

From what I'm reading at least the driver's side hose needs to be removed to properly see any rips or holes |

It's most likely the CAC hose, but you must pull the hose off and remove the webbing to see if there is a split... That would've been my first action. |

OK I'll check the hoses. Probably will do it tomorrow since it's dark outside now. |

You got my vote on the CAC hose as well. |

Sounds STRONGLY of a split hose, but the 'takes off and falls on its face' in your post is confusing to me. My intake hose had split underneath, and could not be visually inspected or seen until it was removed from the engine. Once the hose had split through completely however, there was no 'taking off' anymore. It had NO power at all and lots of smoke... And a really obvious LOUD whooshing noise. Now I am still having a 'power loss then it zooms away' kinda performance... And my conclusion is the boost controller vacuum solenoid that I have yet to replace. It is possible that you are having the same problem, but worse than I am. But I would pull both hoses first and visually ensure that they aren't split. Gorilla tape isn't a bad idea for a temp repair to a split air hose, but Home Depot carries a better option: Stretch-and-Seal Silicone tape. Take the stretch part of the name seriously, it really helps the stuff work. You apply it by stretching it lengthwise and wrapping the hose, overlapping the repair tape more than 50% on each wrap. It seals to itself in a few minutes, and the stretching makes it seal even stronger... So it hopefully holds the boost pressure longer. I had that on my split hose for a while without stretching it properly (didn't know at the time) and it lasted almost 1k miles. |

There have been a number of cases of broken welds on the EGR pipe flange at the exhaust manifold connection. This will give you the same symptoms as a split CAC hose but you will get no CEL or codes. I know this has happened to me recently. If you can remove the exhaust heat shield (just three bolts) from just under the coolant reservior you will be able to see the EGR pipe connection to the exhaust manifold. If it is broken you maybe able to talk Jeep into replacing it (even if your out of warranty) as this is a device part and there is a history that they should know about (they certainly know about it over here). Good luck. |

You know...I was wondering why there was a loud WHOOSH of air coming from the drivers side every time the engine would surge. The CAC hose issue would explain that. I'll definitely check that out. |

So it looks like boostcontroller.com has Samco hoses for $250. Anybody know how much OEM hoses are? |

The dealer gave me a 1,000 mile warranty, so they will cover any OEM parts that fail. If the Samco hoses are the same price I might be able to convince them to let me get those. That's why I need to know the cost of OEM hoses. Also, what is the current wait time to get new hoses? |

Mopar Parts America says MSRP is $117 & $174 - ~291 their price $120 & $81 so 201 http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getJointLocator&siteid=214583 and there's a point where the Samco's rub - they flex a bit more from the pressure - make sure you protect them. |

Wow, so the prices on hoses are the same between OEM and Samco?? Hmm.. So when you say "make sure you protect them"...what do you mean? Wrap them with something, or clean them regularly, or what? Should I try to get the dealer to cover some Samco hoses for me, or go with OEM? |

you can use either the stock webbing - or Danoid used webbed stainless http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=475458#p475458 I'd definitely go Samco - it eliminates any concern with oil it just that the Si is more flexible - and someone had it rub a hole |
