Hi Everyone,

My wife and I picked up a 2006 CRD Limited three weeks ago and I have scoured the lost website in search of sound advice and have found much.

I admired these fine rigs when they first hit the market and have one now that they are in my price range.

We need a 4wd in Montana because of the weather and I wanted an American car that got decent mileage, yet could also handle a dirt road. Narrow field of choices... this one rose to the top.

What matters most to me is maintaining/improving reliability because every town is spread apart in Montana. I want to make sure my wife can make it home. I sent out the ECU on Monday of this week and received the ECO tune from GDE today. I like it.

When the bank account recharges I'll be looking at new turbo hoses, lift pump, and fuel head. Maybe at some point I'll throw in one of those euro TCs and upgrade to a HOT tune. Not for a while, though, gotta save up for the other stuff first.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and let you know that I appreciate this site and your knowledge. I'll be around.

Joel

Welcome!
Add the EHM or a Provent to your list of mods and you should have a reliable Jeep!

I've got a 1976 International Scout Terra with a diesel... SD33T It was a Nissan Diesel they used for a few years.... Sold 15,000 total in Scouts and was used in the Nissan Patrol over seas. Great little engine for bouncing around in the woods during elk season and quite efficient, but it isn't powerful enough for the Montana highway system and 75mph... I've thought about swapping in a 6.2 Chevy and a NV 4500 for some added power and driveability but my attention is currently towards this little CRD....

I would show you a photo of the Scout and my CRD if I could figure out how to upload one on this forum.... what am I missing here....??

Is a Provent necessary if I'm running a GDE tune? Sounds like dealing with the EGR reduces the sludge factor...

In my opinion, as a previous owner of VW Tdi's lose the EGR, and you lose the sludge, not even worth messing with the provent. Even GDE does not Provent his own CRD's. He even said on his forum, if condensate were to freeze up the vent hose, you could easily blow the seals on the engine.

I made my own Oil Separator out of 2" PVC pipe and stuffed it with coarse steel wool, works great and I have not had freeze up problems. Every oil change it catches 3-4 oz of oil that is not going into my inter cooler to settle out there. If condensation were to freeze up don't you think it had a better chance to freeze up in an inter cooler blasted with cold air than in the lines going to a Provent or Oil Separator in a warm engine compartment? The other argument for the Provent or Oil Separator is that the 300F + oil mist heated up by the turbo will not be hitting the hose to your inter cooler and cause it to prematurely fail.

Turning off the EGR to prevent intake fouling is a wise move, but I respectfully disagree with GDE on the Oil Separator issue.

I'm with Warp on this one. I'm from the TDI camp too, and had one of the FEW original OldNavy machined aluminum pucks that he designed. Those were a VERY nice piece. I currently have both the SEGR and the GDE tune, b/c I don't want even the HINT of any EGR trash entering my intake.

That said, I had not done the EHM running down the front of the radiator until recently, when my CRD at 73k miles ate it's intercooler-to-engine hose rather spectacularly. The turbo-to intercooler hose is the same age, but hasn't failed... YET. I may still take that one and wrap it in silicone tape to protect it, but I know that it's time is coming. At least I also know that I have stopped the bleeding, and the ONLY oil mist that the engine chooses to eject will be just that: A choice due to positive pressure, not a demand from a deep-suction turbo inlet that hoovers air and oil mist out of my engine. Do the EHM, even if you don't make your own separator or catch can just yet... It is worth it to protect those hoses. And from all the way up front, I haven't smelled the oil ONCE, and I've been running with the AC system on "outside air" and without the compressor turning for a couple months now.

EHM Vs Provent/Oil Separator:
EHM: Many older Diesel engines have used a variation of EHM for many years, besides making the Cereal Box PHDs at EPA and CARB mad, the main draw back is oil, spots on your drive way.
Provent/Oil Separator:
Provent uses a relatively small filter/baffle to separate out the oil mist, in case it gets clogged Provent uses a blow off valve.
Home Made Oil Separators need to be large enough to have enough media so they don't clog up.
Note: When I find a cheap blow off valve or design one, I will post it. As soon as I find or design one it will be installed on mine.

My personal opinion of the Cereal Box PHDs, is that most of them ingested too many illegal drugs and never looked out the window of an aircraft to figure out that most of the country is not LA. We all need to put up with stupid regulations because under perfect conditions in LA smog may possibly form. As we can see their junk science is falling apart and some of them have falsified data that has cost the economy billions if not trillions of dollars to fix non existent problems. Money that would be better used for technological innovation and sound environmental management. The construction worker who double checks the bolt, the painter who carefully paints the pipe, the Engineer who takes another look at the drawing before lunch, the angler who cleans up, or the Hunter who takes careful, aim have all done have all done more for the environment than the clowns who have corrupted organizations that are supposed to improve the quality of life. These corrupt jerks should rot in prison with the general prison population, perhaps then Justice Will Be Served.

I had an Old Navy device on my 98 TDI, along with the epsilon device, etc. The Old Navy device helped, but it could not collect 100% of the oil.

Then, I got a 2002 TDI, and I put on the DieselGeek race pipe, and threw the EGR into the scrap pile. I let that take oil in through the CAC system, all air in there is filtered, so no way to gum any thing up, as long as you use synthetic oil, actually the oil does a good job of cleaning out any left over crap from the EGR. Yes oil is a solvent and it will clean the manifold eventually.

When the time comes I will buy Samco CAC hoses if they fail from oil, age, dry rot, movement of the engine, expansion and contraction, etc.
