I'm hardwiring my gps and xm and I came across this harness under the steering column, any ideas? posted in the general section too, but I wasn't sure if this was a CRD thing or not...

+1 to brake controller

Enjoy!

i was thinking brake controller also, but the hitch is only wired with a 4pin connector. would'nt there be a 6 or 8 pin connector at the hitch if the previous owner towed a trailer with brakes? the harness is also capped off with a specific cap for the connector. i wouldn't think that someone would bother capping it off when they removed whatever was hooked up... strange

Could this be the factory wiring for the renegade light bar? has anyone else popped this panel down and noticed if they have this installed also?

No, this is not related to the factory light bar.
The light bar has a relay under the hood (behind the battery) and only a limited amout of wiring going to the switch in the dash, and a little add a circuit in the drivers side fuse box.

That wiring harness is not factory as you can see it was spliced in and laying open like a pile of noddles. Is that a connector on one end turned backwards?

X2 :SOMBRERO: I installed a harness for trailer brakes and can tell you for sure there's nothing that sloppy anywhere on the jeep from the factory :-)r

x3 the yellow crimp ons are a dead give away. And I was hoping to learn something about a CRD mystery part?

being that that is probably not factory you would need to look at what the wires that are spliced into are for. I would be willing to bet that someone added a break controler to tow something that had electric breaks then took the controler back before trading it in. if you don't have the round connecor at the hitch maybe that put that back to stock too and only left that pig tail.

so, here's some more pics of the connector and where it's spliced into the harness. also, notice the smaller black connector I found that was just hanging there not connected to anything. it's got one red and one black wire going to it. that looks like a factory connector. thanks for the responses so far.

could even be a remote start/alarm system

Post subject:  Re: anyone know what this is for?

It isn't the factory remote starter, if that is what its for. I've got one of those, which looks like it was wired in by two drunks and a monkey, and they let the monkey do all the cutting. Talk about wire spaghetti! The "controller" for my remote starter is a small box about the size of a pager (anyone remember those?) loosely stuffed under the steering column. It isn't tied down at all, and apparently one of the connections isn't solid, b/c the stupid thing moves occasionally and the CRD's key security shuts the engine off... Or lets it start AND sets off the alarm.

Such a great installation job, and it was done by a dealer's "five star" service techs. :ROTFL: Stupid muppets. :banghead:

that is up under the column, that could very easily be an aftermarket remote start connector..........

The 2-way looks like the one for the factory foot well courtesy lamps. They gave away the connectors and the screws but didn't give us the lights. All you have to do is buy the lamps and install them. There's several posts on the subject here's a good one: http://liberty.eurekaboy.com/courtesylights.htm

That's definately the footwell light connector, thanks for solving that part of the mystery! I think i'm leaning towards remote starter for the rest of the wiring. thanks for the help everyone

Another possibility, if it is wired into the ignition, is a turbo timer. I think CATCRD has one on his rig, maybe he could shed some light on whether it is a remote start or a turbo timer.

I decided to order the footwell courtesy lights, for $30 why not! Thanks for the info RabidRdKill. Turbo timer? that's interesting, I'm really curious to find out what the wiring is for. I'm wondering what the previous owner did to my rig. hmm...
