I have been wanting to tinker with the exhaust on the CRD for quite some time now so I finally got around to this past VDay while I had some time to burn.

What I did:

Fabricated a stainless steel off set straight pipe to delete the offset style muffler.

Factory style connection

It is basically a 2.5" straight pipe now from the cat-back.

This has really helped reduce turbo lag and the CRD feels a bit more torquey

Here is a sound clip

CRD Exhaust out and next to one of our midnight specials before a race event two years ago. Funny thing is, we were only suppose to have the side exit exhaust on the Focus for that one track day but ended up using it on several times for several events.

Well the side exit had its days in the sun and now was the time for it to be recycled into another quick special. Here is the salvaged pieces cut and ready to be welded

Image

Pieces here have been welded together and to the factory tail pipe. I cut the socket flange until the 2.5" tube met up to it with out any restrictions along with the tail pipe. I cleaned the socket flange via media blasting and simple green before welding. The tail pipe was a pos and didn't clean up very well.

After driving the Jeep for a few days now and knowing how other turbo systems can respond, I think I will be building a 3-3.5" down pipe and full exhaust soon. This time I will TIG weld it too instead of putting it together in an hour which is basically what I did here, :ROTFL:

Does not sound too bad at all, I thought it might be alot noisier?

I did the same thing about a month ago just not as pretty as yours. It sounds a little farty at idle but I got used to it. It definately gets more looks going down the street with the turbo whistling.

I did mine (well, paid meineke to do it) about 2 years ago and couldn't be happier. One of the unexpected cool parts is more clearance offroad :)

I did mine in December and the performance increase was exceptional. The best part about it was how it tamed the excessive engine shake and rattle.

I also installed the Striker I Diesel Power Module for the 2005-2006 Jeep Liberty 2.8L, and adjusted the fuel pressure at idle, which smoothed out the engine.

The Idle Pressure Compensation has a range of +9 and -2. This adjusts the idle fuel pressure up or down incrementally to improve the idle noise of the diesel engine.

This alone was an improvement too and is worth it's weight in gold, I set the Idle pressure compensation at -2 and the jeep purrrrrs while at idle. This is the way the jeep should have been sold from the beginning

Is that with or without the cat? With or without guts? That actually sounds good. Like a small diesel truck ought to .

RT, how was that install?

If you have kept and reused the original ball flange you have also kept the restriction in the pipe system. The pipe from the Cat to the Cat flange steps down in diameter twice and the internal diameter of the ball flange also is restrictive. The optimal flow approach is to ditch the orginal flange and either: install a new open flange above the Cat Pipe step down; or weld your pipe directly to the Cat pipe (above the step down, and thus eliminating the flange altogether.

CRD Joe,

The Striker I Diesel Power Module install was an easy install, took 15 minutes.

The improvement to the engine idle noise and rattle is a beautiful thing. You can lower the idle pressure very simply with a push of a button, This part of the device is what makes it worth every penny.

I think it's on sale for $99.00 now ..... I paid a lot more than that back in November (hundreds more).

I don't know if it's just the camera he used or what...but that sounded a LOT better than my CRD did when I straight piped it before. I did mine exactly like his. I mean..how many ways can you take a muffler out and put a section of pipe in, you know? You either get it right or you don't. And on mine...it sounded like rice. It was terrible. And I got no increase in economy or power either. I ditched it for a magnaflow in less than a week's time.

Anybody have any concrete numbers for what kind of MPGs you picked up after this mod?

Thanks for the scoop. Those were the very things that my wife noticed when we test drove an '05 Sport and an '05 limited today. Good to know!

Not really digging it folks. Sound is unacceptable IMO.

Post subject:  Re: CRD Muffler Delete Sound Clip

Sound may not be acceptable to some but the increase in performance surely is.

True. But you can only dump so much exhaust out the back as what comes in the front. Unless the air is lacking up front, what's the need other than the restriction? Some engines require back pressure for optimum performance. I have no idea where the CRD falls in this catagory.

Post subject:  Re: CRD Muffler Delete Sound Clip

You don't want any back pressure after a turbocharger.

Thanks for the info. I'm more of an old school carb guy but thanks for that. So, what can be done for the farty noise? Maybe stay with a muffler, only use a non restrictive one and also gutless cat?

I cut the socket flange so that it meets exactly with the 2.5" tube. There is no restriction on the "cat back" side.

The cat is still in their and in tact.

For those who have done this and had poor results, I would say that not all work is equal and attention to detail is critical. If someone was to just toss a straight tube in their, the exhaust flow would be turbulent and therefore create unwanted resonance and frequency. Keeping tubes inline and fluid like will create better sound and performance.

My next step is to create a new 3-3.5" down pipe from the turbo and then a new 3-3.5" final exhaust. I will put a little more effort into it this time though.

3" down pipe to a 2 bolt flange -->2 bolt flange 3" final exhaust.
The cat will be deleted
100% 304 Stainless and TIG welded

Then I hope to swap the turbo out this summer

What are your plans for the flexcoupling as it is only 2.5" ID at the max, mabye slightly smaller? The flexcoupling is beneficial to isolate the turbo from the rest of the exhaust system to reduce the vibrational forces acting on the turbo. It also helps to reduce the static forces on the turbine housing. Some of the larger diesel appications should have larger flexcouplings that would work with a 3" exhaust, however this is not a cheap component.

The catalyst reduces the HC and CO emissions by roughly 90-95% and without it the exhaust smell can be very pugnant and downright painful to the eyes.

I can buy a larger aftermarket diameter flex coupling, simple as that.

Thank you for the heads up the cat, I have never removed a cat on a diesel so its hard for me to guess what the effects are other the harmful effects on the environment and better performance.
