They are pricey. I was thinking I would have to get one this winter but so far so good. I went on a site that said the average redtop last something like 3.7 years. That got me looking at Wally's. I saw a mega CCA like 750+ battery that they have there for around $75. Had a 3 year full replacement, no prorated warranty. I may have to go that route when the time comes. |

group 24 or 25(cant remember) walmart yellow, it fits, the posts barely touch the hood insulation and it cost $75. If I had to do again (was on a trip) I would get a autozone, i think they have a group 34 with slightly highere cca for only another 10 bucks |

My Red Top crapped out the first morning it got down to freezing this winter... well it wasn't really winter but you know. I got an Auto Craft Gold from Advance Auto Parts. Group 34 and installed backwards... fit fine. I don't remember the price exactly now I think it was $93 or something like that with tax. intersting thing about the red top that was in there was rated 750CCA the one I could have got for $179 was Rated at 800CCA. The Auto Craft is 800 or more also. |

The AutoCraft warranty is way better. with out looking I would say its 72 or 84 month prorated with 36 month free replacement. |

The one from autozone is the same way. The redtops claim to be more vibration resistant. I don't know that to be true though. |

I don't know about more vibration resistant. spiral cell batteries don't use the same liquid acid but I'm not comvinced they are better since mine didn't last any longer than a standard battery. |

There is confusion on what 34 optima we need. Some listings list a 34R and others including the Optima site call for just a 34. I tried a 34R and it would have been next to impossible so I took it back and got a 34 and it worked with just a little bending of the negative cable. Sams club computer lists the 34R and would not sell me a 34. Advanced autoparts's computer calls for a 34 They inadvertently sold me a 34R instead and it would not work well at all. I exchanged it for a 34 and am happy. For the advantages of an optima check their web site ![]() Diesel cars (jeeps) eat battries. I've owned close to 20 small diesels and 3 years is good for a battery. Gas cars are different and 5 years or more seems normal. |

Interesting, I've had exactly the opposite results. Granted I've only owned 2 diesels, but I beat the snot out of them and the batteries have lasted just as long or longer than in my previous gas vehicles. When the alternator failed on my Jetta, I drove it more than 50 miles with no power at all... B/c a diesel doesn't NEED much power to keep running, unlike a gasser. As always... YMMV

I consider our Redtop a high use battery since we have 7 months+ of winter. It gets a full charging everyday during it's 75 mile round trip commute. My wife has to crank on it some at 0* to get it to stay running. I think we have resolved that though. Instead of mearly waiting for the glow plug light to go off, she now counts to 15-20 after turning the key on. Fires right up. Got off topic as usual. Sorry.

Quote: Sams club computer lists the 34R and would not sell me a 34. There's the problem!!! Granted I love Sam's Club for some things but They would not sell me the tires I wanted in the size I wanted not even the same size that was on the Jeep. They had the best price by like $25-$30 a set but they would only mount 225/70R16 not 245's like I wanted, not even 235's like came on mine as stock as an option. Sam's has some rigid policy that they can't install anything other than the book says. they lost my tire and battery $$ |

I once wanted them to install 2 tires, and they said they could only do a set of 4. |

yeah it's liability..... the bigger the company the more protective they tend to be. at advance the guy told be he didn't see why I needed the optima and was eilling to try the Auto craft gold group 34 but if that didn't fit I'd have to buy the optima or look someplace else. |
