Called the local Chrysler dealer to get a quote on install of the new "Euro" TC. They ran my VIN and said that in February of 2007 this Jeep had a new TC installed already. He had no part # info. available for the TC they used. How do I know if the "Euro" TC was used in the 2007 replacement or not?? I don't want to buy a Euro TC to stop my shudder if that's what I already have! Help! |

The Euro converter was just introduced in copious availability within the last six months. I think it was first available (with a little wait) in fall of 2009. If you had the F37 done in 2007, you got the crappy converter. |

OK well I'm going to assume that I have a TC that's the "old" design then. Would it be fair to assume that my Jeep got a new pump when they did the TC? |

No that's not fair to assume. The recall replaced the torque converter with the pump as an option. Mine wasn't replaced, and failed a year later (pump). |

Ok. Well I ordered the Euro TC today. Hope to see it sometime next week. Then I'll go to a transmission shop and get them to install it and check my pump while they are in there. |

Liberty, If the trans is working fine (other than TC shudder) and the pump seal is not leaking, I would suggest you will be fine just replacing the TC. (My dealer wanted $700 additional (P&L) to replace the pump when they were doing a warranty repair of the rear main seal.) DOC |

Under what conditions will they replace the pump and seals? |

Talked to the reputable tranny shop where I'm going with mine, and he showed me why the pump was replaced by Chrysler under warranty often times. He said anytime you do a TC, regardless of whether the pump is bad or not it's a good idea to replace the collar it rides on and those seals in there, and the plate seal as well. He said they ALWAYS rebuild those parts when they do a TC so all the mating surfaces will mesh together properly and so that you won't have leaks. So rather than buying a new $300 pump, he's going to just rebuild anything in mine that needs help for half that price. I'm looking at $700 total for the pump work and TC installation, which is a solid 6-8 hour job according to my father who is a veteran mechanic. |

Liberty, Supposedly the "old style" seal is no longer available. So, in order to replace the seal you have to also buy a new pump to mate up to it. The shop does not know that bacause they probably have never done a KJ CRD before. Ask them to confirm that the seal is leaking before you spend a bundle you probably do not need to. DOC |

So my KJ is going into surgery today. Ended up taking it to a local AAMCO because the guys there were nice and knew what they were talking about. They are going to install the new TC for me, check out my pump, and do new filters in the tranny while they are working in that area. I'm at 79K so I figured it couldn't hurt since I don't know what the previous owner had done and what they didn't. This is probably going to set me back $700 but at least I know it's done right and quick. I hope to never have to touch the transmission on this thing ever again. |

Liberty, There is no reason to "check out the pump". If they see that the seal is not leaking when they remove the trans, there is nothing more to do except R&R the TC and replace trans. (Replacing the filter/fluid is another operation.) If the seal is leaking, you have to replace the pump, not because it is "bad", rather that you can no longer get seals for that pump. DOC |

About to visit the shop and see if the Jeep has made it out of surgery yet. Hopefully it's going well. |

Good luck. I was having "drain-back" issues so had the pump done along w/ the TC. When mine was F37'd the pump was not replaced. Just replaced a crappt TC for another crappy TC But I'm happy to report the tranny has been running perfectly ever since the change.

Jeep is out of surgery. GDE HOT tune + "Euro" TC = This thing is smooth as a baby's bottom now. Runs hard and strong. No shudder. Even acts much smoother at slow speed. I'm VERY pleased so far. Woohoo!! Question #1: Upon inspection, the shop appears to have stripped a transmission bolt on the passenger side and they just left it in there. Two other bolts are completely missing. One of them is in a hard to reach spot near the top. So I've got some tranny bolts that they left out, however....there are NO leaks visible and no rattling noticeable. Is this a problem? Should I ignore it? Question #2: When they reattached the gromments holding the exhaust pipe immediately behind the flexible section (the grommets are mounted to a bracket which attaches to the crossmember)....they installed it on TOP of the bracket, rather than on the bottom. So....instead of the exhaust hanging from the bracket here as I imagine it should...it is resting above the bracket and is therefore wedged against the heat shield. Again...is THIS a problem? Will having the exhaust touching the heat shield be dangerous? |

I would want all the bolts installed. It might not be a problem today, but someday when you least expect it... That said though, are you sure there are bolts missing? Sometimes there are holes for dowel pins that could look like bolt holes. Also, you mentioned a stripped bolt. Is the head stripped or the threads? I would be concerned about the exhaust too. Still pretty hot by that point. Carpet fires suck! |

There are also some holes on the right side that are for a right hand starter and aren't used in our app. |

The transmission bellhousing is a one-size-fits-all and just because there are empty holes on the flange side it doesn't mean there are missing bolts. However, missing bolts are a problem. That situation likely was the main reason torque converter #2 was retired along with pump #1. Also led to a vibration that transmitted into the passenger compartment. |

OK thanks for the advice. I took care of problem #2. Had to unbolt the exhaust at the flange near the muffler, then was able to pull the pipe downward until the rubber grommets swung down where they should be. All is well with the exhaust again. Took a closer look at problem #1 and it appears that I can only see one bolt they left out. The one I thought was broken off in the hole is actually just a bolt that screws in from the opposite side. And I do see the flange that is unused mentioned above. So it looks like with only one bolt visibly missing, that I'm in better shape than I thought. Interestingly, the one missing is easy to reach so when I get time maybe I'll try to get one in there. Going to road test it some more tomorrow and make sure that everything is well. I'm so happy to have it all fixed.

DOC4444 wrote: Liberty, So exactly what did they supposedly do and what did they charge? DOC They installed TC part # 68037142AA. They inspected the pump to ensure all was well with it, and it looked good. They installed two new trans. filters. And obviously they used new gaskets and fluid. Total was $660 My father is a mechanic and runs his own business and I've been doing his book-keeping and accounting stuff for him, and based on the labor rate we charge his customers...he wouldn't have even done the work for that cheap. So I feel pretty good about it. Normally we tackle things like this in the driveway...but I really didn't feel like it this time.
