So I went to their site and I am looking for:

1. A thermostat (I may wait for the member who is fabbing them up) MSRP = $142.00 your price = $94.35
2. A front drive shaft (I have a pinky hole in my rear boot) MSRP = $417.00 your price = $277.77

How can there be such a difference in price? Why would anyone EVER go to a dealer to purchase a part? What am I missing? Does the dealership system really make $186.88 off of me if I drive all the way to their store and wait in their lobby instead of picking up a package off of my front porch in a few days?

It just seems too good to be true. How am I getting ripped off... I didn't try to order yet, do I need to be a member?

Are you talking about www.moparpartsamerica.com ? Their prices are good too, and when you go to purchase the parts the website will walk you through the membership process.

Yes, dealerships significantly raise the prices on you so that they, too, can make a profit. It is far cheaper to order parts online, for any manufacturer.

That is like a bad stereotype that they are ripping you off. They are paying for the guy behind the counter, the building, the utilities, insurance, workers comp, employee benefits.............. I am sure I can think of 100 other things. The choice is yours if you go to the dealer or buy online. Online is much more volume then the dealer.

I should have been more clear. I guess when I see a price difference that large, I assume I am not getting quality parts. I should have said that. I understand that the dealership has more to pay for, I was just wondering what the catch is. I guess there isn't one. I was talking about Moparpartsamerica. Is that the ACTUAL company that manufactures parts for Chrysler? I know they say that they are right down the street, but are they in any way sanctioned by Chrysler?

MoparPArtsAmerica is a wholesale parts seller that is affiliated with a Jeep dealership in Oregon. They sell OEM Mopar-manufactured parts - but they are not the parts maker.

I've ordered lots of parts from MPA and have always been satisfied. Its the same part you would get from the dealer.

I spoke with one of the guys at Newberg when I received the wrong sensor (Problem on MPA's website) and they were very friendly. What the parts tech at the dealer told me was that MPA is basically a "volume buyer" at their dealership, and has a shop-rate account like any other repair shop. The only difference is that the prices might be a bit better still than a normal shop.

The guys at MPA (called them after the dealership) said that there was a problem with that image, but that they were blocked from listing exact part numbers on their search pages by Chrysler.

They must do a stupid amount of volume to be noticed by Chrysler like that.

Our parts director owns his own plane.

may be they balance profits/lossses from other departments with the parts department.

It is unreasonable to think that they can justify a 100% markup in many parts...(like the drive shaft i m about to buy from mopartsamerica for 50% of the dealer`s price for the EXACT same part).

specially when moparts america is already making profit too and they can still give you half the price than a dealership.

In my opinion dealers are just bs... you have to wear kevlar pants when you buy a car so you don`t get screwed, they generally fail at repairs (or bs you about warranties) and are extremely overpriced.

may be I just had a lot of bad luck with dealers... but i go out of my way to avoid them.

Those radiators they sell at the local auto parts stores for $180-$200....you can get those on eBay brand new all day long for $35. I bought one for my ZJ and it was higher quality when I took it out of the box than the OEM part that was on my Jeep!

So the 300% markup they put on parts... um...yeah that is the reason you see Advance, O'reilly, AutoZone, etc. popping up on every corner these days.

Don't be afraid of buying online.

No, you aren't alone in the treatment by dealers. I got hosed out of warranties by two different dealers on two different vehicles. My Jetta had 5100 miles on it when I bought it, and had been previously registered... But the scum dealer wouldn't provide the "certified used car 100k warranty" b/c they insisted it wasn't a used car. Oh, then it DROVE to Florida from Mexico where it was built? No, but you still don't get that warranty for free. You can always pay us the $1800 that warranty costs.

Then there was the fiasco on the CRD where I *HAD* the 7/70... Until Chrysler's system decided I didn't. The selling dealer offered zero help on that one too.

There is a reason they are known as "stealerships" and it is a well-earned name.

never ordered a thing from MPA but have looked around the site prices seem good from what I have seen. I have gotten a few things at Stettler Dodge Jeep, nothing big just lugage rack covers and a rear wiper, I don't feel over charged by the dealer so far. I will be compairing MPA to the dealer in the future.
