Yes, it is the air temperature sensor.

if its just an air temperature sensor then it shouldnt matter where i put it as long as it doesnt get dirt or anything on it.

Have you thought about a snorkle? No better cold air intake than that.
I've installed two on CRD's,and the sounds from the turbo are just awesome.

So what is this "cold air" going to do when it hits the HOT turbo?

I want a snorkel but haven't been able to find one for ours. Please let me know where you got yours and for how much KJ. The last time I was in the research phase (2007) I was quoted $400+ and shipping from Austrailia. The ends just don't justify the means when it comes to that kind of money. That's Hot Tune money

I question the worth of one too... When I was a total Newbee here I was talked out of one and even a K&N filter. I got the Amsoil air filter and never looked back. air is heated by the turbo some and cooled by the intercooler so ask how much cooler is the aire going to be with a cool air intake....... I don't want to sound like killjoy but I don't think much to make the preformance worth the trouble and $$. Plus if you are doing it for athestics who is going to see it or know its there untill you open the hood? hardly anyone

I think the snorkle is a cool idea since it takes the intake air from higher up where there is less dust, water and junk. plus it looks wicked cool too.

If you notice, the tube from the factory airbox to the turbo is what... 8" long? There is zero restriction there already. The only thing you could do that might, possibly, maybe have any benefit is to change the airbox to an open cylindrical type filter.

For me, I decided to keep the factory airbox because it provides better protection from water ingress and debris ingress...which is extremely important on a turbo-charged vehicle.

Whether you use the factory intake hose or switch to a V6 top side style...this is cheap and pretty easy...the grill blocks on the drivers side are gone during the hotter months (about 10 of them here in South Texas. The air scoop in the second slot directs air behind the first slot and then up to the V6 snorkel.

My grille is similar.
You can see that the upper left is open and there is a baffle that directs flow behind the headlight
into the stock air box.
My grille blockers stay in year round and I dont have any overheating problems, even in FL.

im only removing the air filter box and putting a cylindrical filter in place of the air box right now, the intake tube is so tight idk if i can make one, may have to talk to my fabricator buddy for that, but im thinking of just cutting the tube off the top part of the air box that has the MAFS in it and using it as a coupling to connect the new filter, i just a bought the biggest cylindrical filter they had at pep boys and im going to try and fit it in there, and then im going to fab up a heat deflector to go behind the filter that seals against the hood when closed to help keep the heat away from the filter.

Without a hood scoop directed at the filter, this setup would not have any type of positive pressure that a ram air/cold air/snorkle would provide. Not that it would make any difference in a diesel.
In theory,I believe this setup is a downgrade to what you allready have.Just because it has more surface area, the lack of force would negate it.

Thoughts?

you could be right, were did you get your snorkle from? i think what i really need to do is redirect the intake hose so that the filter ends up right in front of the hose that all the air comes into, and then make a shield that seals around the cone filter and seals the top of it when the hood closes, is the intake hose on the 3.7 the same diameter as the hose on the CRD? if it is then it may be possible for me to shop round and find an enclosed cone filter set up and have it fit in my CRD so then i will have the surface area and the pressure all in one. because the turbo def. spools up much easier with more surface, but i do see what you mean about the pressure
