This one has me scratching my head. I started my CRD on Saturday morning, and put it in reverse. The torque converter was still empty, so I put it back into park and waited for about 5 seconds. Back into reverse, and the truck started to move normally. Just as I got to the end of my driveway, the engine stalled without warning and will not re-start at all. There was no CEL, no sputtering, no warning at all. The only thing that I found funny was that there was a single chime, the low oil light came on, then there was another single chime. I put in one litre of oil, and that stopped, but the engine still refuses to start. So, ladies and gents, what do you think? Any ideas? I want my Jeep to bring me places!

Dean.

Step one is to check for and or bleed any air from the system. Instructions are in the owners manual :D

Step 2. Drain any water collected at the bottom of the fuel/water separator filter by unscrewing the plug at the bottom of the filter the plug has an electrical connector that needs to be detached as well. Catch the fuel in an empty can so that you don't have a mess on your driveway. Replace the plug and attach the connector........ pump the primer pump and try starting.

If it doesn't start then we need a step three.

Step 3: Check the battery. Actually, totally remove it and take it to an auto parts store and have them put a load test on it (Auto Zone etc.) Mine had a bad cell in the red top. I replaced it almost two years ago. This seemed to cause phantom issues (dome lights turn on when I put it in drive :grim: and other haunting maladies :frankie: ). Didn't cure everything (like I've written before, she had "personality) but it did seem to take care of it. By the time you return with the batter from the part store and exhanged it for DieHard AGM battery at Sears (no flames, it works for me, I've seen the battery discussions :SOMBRERO: ) your jeep will have hopefully lost all its charge and you can revive it from scratch. :dead: This assumes that Joe's advice with priming it did not work...

Will it turn over? Did you get any kind of code form it? How long did you run it with low oil? If it was low enough to cause the idiot light to be lit, it was likely more than 1 quart low. In order for the Idiot light to be tripped, the oil pressure has to be very low. If it was that low there is possible internal damage, as this engine is extremely sensitive to oil levels.

I would think the oil light came on because it died and the key was still on. Sounds like air in the fuel to me.

Very possibly, but we need more info instead of just guessing.

We have a winnaaaaah! Actually, I feel like quite the dork, as I was on the right track, found exactly what the problem was, but because I did not realize that it was a problem, I sent it to the garage and the mechanic had it started inside of three minutes. It turned out that the fuel filter was loose and was sucking air. The mechanic tried to prime it and saw air bubbles and fuel coming out of the filter threads. (as I did) He grabbed it and tightened it, primed it again and it started on the first shot. Oh well, live a little, learn a little. In the meantime, thanks for the help and advice. I will be coming here quite regularly to read all of the pearls of wisdom that are here.

Thanks again,

Dean!
