Post subject:  u joint is gone..

Hi, my drive shaft U-joint is gone in the rear axle.

at this point i don`t have a place to work on my car for more than 1 hr or 2...

I can, take it to a shop.. or get a new drive shaft assembly and change it in 30 minutes myself. (probably for the same money).

The problem is i have trouble finding the right part number from moparamerica site... Called them and they said i should buy 52853130AE for 206.66, but when i look for the part number on the parts catalog, seems to point to the shaft only and not the entire assembly as i m looking for.

have any of you bought an entire shaft assembly with the u joints ready to put on the jeep ? if so ! what part number did you order?

or at least know if the 52853130AE is the right part and comes pre-assembled with new ujoints and ready to pop in?

Thanks !

I just replaced mine. autozone duralast gold lifetime warranty. part number 1-0153DG 12.00 ea

They list two, don't know why, but I mine was 3.219 outside lockup. I got the larger one and had to exchange them once I figured that I couldn't fit them betweem the yoke.

There are quite a few video's and how to's on replacing the u-joints using sockets and a big hammer. Drive shaft comes out with the remove of 4 bolts that connect it to the differential. slips off the transfer case output shaft. Once I got the drive shaft out, the job went quickly, less 2 hours in my basement replacing both of them. re-install took all of 15 minutes

Supplies:
Big hammer and an assortment of sockets.
I found a sparkplug socket worked well and since I have a diesel, I wasn't worried about destroying it.
Two u-joints
penetrating oil
Grease for the slip yoke
A wide zip tie to reseal dust boot
blue loctite for the bolts

Block your tires so it doesn't roll over you when you take the drive shaft out. !!!!!!

O'Reilly has a premium strong non regreasable and NAPA has the same in a regreasable.
Both good U joints.
Avoid NEPCO, they are made from slag, not steel.

I just did BOTH u-joints in my rear driveshaft. Got GREASABLE ones from O'reilly for a total of around $30. That's what you want...that way you can get longer service life from them.

Contrary to popular opinion, this is usually not a simple driveway job. We usually spend a signficant amount of time trying to remove the old joints. On my KJ, we were about to damage the ears on the driveshaft and elected to cut the old joints out with a torch to prevent tearing anything up further. Good luck.

The thing is that i DONT want to mess with the Ujoints... that is why i want the entire assembly... Live in an apartment building and don`t have the space to fix it ...

I bought the entire shaft assembly from MPA and the part number indicated that it was only the drive shaft, but David at MPA informed me that it came as an assembly with the ball joints and rear "spindle" or knuckle or whatever it's called.... It cured the the issues i was having back there.

The mechanic at FleetPride said that diesels can do a number on drive shafts and they are always checked for deformity when removed for U-Joints work. He mentioned that I should have mine rebalanced before the new u-joints go on to make sure that it's not out of balance.

I added up all the parts and labor to repair the shaft and a new drive shaft assembly was more than worth it.

Problem is gone.

I had the job done when I replaced my TC and Pump, since the drive shaft was already out, it cost me nothing to replace.

No, but David at mopar parts america.com will assist you when you call.

You may also ask the parts department at your dealer for help.
