Post subject:  New to me 2006 CRD, Torque Converter and GDE tune question

I'll start by thanking you folks for all of the time that you have put in and for the information presented on this forum. It is really a stellar resource.

I just picked up my new jeep on Saturday. It is a 2006 Liberty CRD Sport with 21,000 miles. I checked the build date, and it was built in February 2006. So, here is question 1. I have read a lot of the posts on torque converter issues, and in two of them it is stated that Jeep (I have a moral objection calling a Jeep a Chrysler) put a different torque converter into the CRD Liberty after 12/2005. However, I didn't see any comment on just which torque converter that was. So, is the torque converter installed after 12/2005 the Euro unit?

My second question is related to your experiences with GDE's two ECM tunes. From my research, I interpret the HOT tune to be everything the ECO tune is except it provides higher peak horsepower/torque numbers. I assume from increased fuel flow at WOT. Is there a reason to get the ECO tune over the HOT tune? I tow a 2000# boat, and 3400# travel trailer, and figure the extra oomph would be nice.

I'll probably have more questions as the miles rack up. Thank you for any help that you can give me.

JRC

From what I understand, the "Euro" TC, which is the new one, did not become available until 2009. Chrysler decided to use this as the warranty replacement sometime in the past two years.

My Jeep had a new TC under warranty in 2/2007....and it was the same TC that it had from the factory. I had the "Euro" TC installed earlier this year, and I can confirm that it works MUCH better.

It's part# 68037142AA if you want to check moparpartsamerica.com for it.

There are a total of THREE torque converters associated with the 05 and 06 model years KJ CRD's.

Those built before NOVEMBER 05 had the worst of the three and were replaced under the F37 tsb with the second type and the flash
Those built from N0VEMBER 05 and on were the second type and only got flashed under the F37 tsb

The THIRD type was made for the newer more powerfull engine that's available in rest of the world and has been made the replacement TC for the 05 and 06 US models.

SO NO 05 OR 06 MODEL YEARS CAME WITH THE EURO TORQUE CONVERTER.

I started with the GDE ECO tune and since the TC has been replaced with the Euro TC I got the $50 upgrade to the "Full Torque" Eco tune.
I personally prefer a reliable over hot vehicle. I'm waiting formy spare TCM to return with the pre F37 programming.

I see. I'll get a Euro TC on order. Thank you for the clarification. For now, the ECO tune looks like the best option, and upgrade later on if it seems worth it. I have to say that the engine in its stock form isn't a dog, but more torque is always welcome when towing.

If your going to get the Euro TC then go ahead and get the "full torque Eco" tune and save the $50 upgrade fee.

I have the the Hot Tune, GDE TCM tune, and the Euro on my LTD CRD. I am going to be taking a 130 mile ride on rural highways this weekend, it is going to be nice to be in 5th gear locked up most of the way at speeds averaging 50 MPH. You cant do that with F37 or non F37.

You will need to install the new updated and revised OEM transmission pump also, TC and Pump Go hand in hand.

Is the new tranny pump required if you install the Transgo kit? My research says that the Transgo kit will correct the leak issue without the expense of the new pump. Did I get this right?

I just paid my dues for the ECO tune. It sounds like it will cover my needs nicely.

My understanding is the Transgo kit has parts to upgrade the valve in the pump. So YES you got it right.

Good, there is a pretty steep price difference.

Thanks.

Well I took that long ride on rural highways today, averaging between 50 and 70 MPH with no downshifts and TQ locked up with the GDE TCM tune :pepper:

I pulled one mountain pass that was straight up hill with no turns and a passing lane, had the pedal to the metal blowing away lesser vehicles that burn "gasoline" while leaving them in a cloud of thick black smoke

Average MPG was 33 MPG :D

Good job on the TCM tune GDE 8)
