Thinkin about buying a 2000 dodge 2500 cummins as a second vehicle. The one I'm looking at has 112K miles and 4 speed automatic. Any issues with this yr/motor/tranny combo I should be aware of?

The major thing is the lift pump and possibly injector pump (VP44). The original lift pumps are known for dying, and when they do, they starve the VP44 and ultimately kill it, costing much $$$. There are plenty of good options (not too expensive) to replace the crappy original lift pump. Once that's done the VP44 can be quite reliable. Best thing to do is see if it has the original lift pump and if so, check the fuel pressure going to the VP44. Once that's straightened out, you've got yourself a good truck.

I had an '02, which has the same pumps. I had the original lift pump changed out to the reliable, current in-tank pump under warranty. Once that was done, I had no issues. I regret selling that truck.

Check out cumminsforum.com and dieseltruckresource.com for A LOT of helpful information.

The lift pump is usually the culprit with the fuel system problems. Several different upgrades are available, depends on how much $$$ you want to spend.

I would also look into getting a fuel pressure gauge if you get the truck.

No doubt that the fuel pump/VP is an issue with these trucks. In your case I'd check the fuel pressure. If OK, you're probably fine. If you get the truck, I'd still recommend a good aftermarket pump with at least a low fuel pressure light if not a gauge. The VPs can be funny, some get abused and do well, others get babied and don't last. For the most part they do well with a good supply of clean fuel.
