Hi Guys, What is with two drain plugs in the engine sump. When I removed the front drain plug I got about 1/2 quart, and when I removed the drain plug in the bottom towards the rear, I got another 7 1/2 quarts. That 8 quarts total, the maintance manual said the capacity was 6.4 quarts. Are there to separate sections in the engine sump? What is the correct quantity of oil to put in, including the oil filter. Regards Rob |

It is 6.4 qts. You have also drained either the front differential, or the transfer case, or the transmision. |

The front plug that you removed is not a drain plug. It is just used in manufacturing to plug the drilling in the pan used to supply the oil gallery. Just remove the one in the bottom and you'll get it all out. If you truly got 8qts out altogether, your sump was way overfilled. Make sure you only added 6.4 quarts of new oil. |

Laugh it up, CB's. Do you remember when you did not know snot? It probably was not that long ago. Everyone needs to learn something, some could stand some manners. Rob, maybe a good time to download the manual from Sir Sam. Just be careful of the aluminum oil pan, threads strip easily, some like the Fumoto valve. |

Regards Rob 1. Regarding 1/2 quart - what color of the drained out oil ? If red (Mopar ATF+4) - you drained transfer case. If brown or dark brown (SAE 80W90)- you drained front axle. 2. Regarding 7 1/2 quarts - again: What color of the drained out oil ? If red (Mopar ATF+4) - you drained transmission oil(5-45RFE). If dark brown or black - you drained engine oil, but it`s too much for engine capacity (must be 6,4 quarts for 2,8crd). There are no separate sections in the engine sump |

There are no separate sections in the engine sump No, both plugs are in the oil pan. Look at the front of your pan and there is a plug there, threaded horizontally, that is just used to seal off a drilled passage. It shouldn't be removed for normal maintenance. He has not drained the tranny, diff or t-case. |

But it could have been plausible that someone drained the transfer case by mistake. Crazier things have happened. |

Anyway - engine oil capacity is only 6,1 litres or 6,4 quarts. P.s. Sorry for my english |

Thanks all, I think 'FastRob' was right about the plug in the front of the engine sump, only being there for machining purpose, but it was the first plug I saw when I got under. But when I only go a small amount of oil I went looking and found the drain plug in the base of the sump at the rear. I did get 7 1/2 Liters out of it, I measured it with a measuring jug as I disposed of it, it was as black as black. I know the Transfercase and the front diff, I found them a long time ago. Thanks again for you replys. Rob |

Thanks again for you replys. Rob Sorry littlegun, hope I didn't offend you but it was a bit funny. If it's black as black than you know it's old motor oil. That seems a bit high and the dipstick isn't the best indicator. If this is your first oil change, than the previous owner might have went by the dipstick which might be 7 1/2 qts to the top. Do like these guys say,use 6.4 qts only. |

While we're discussing oil draining. I have an '05 with the plug that uses a 8mm hex to remove it. I have read on this forum that DCJ has a new type plug. Did Jeep offer a "new and improved plug" over the original hard as hell to remove plug? My $0.02 on the 6.4 qts. Using a standard filter and 6.4qts come up a half quart short. Thanks everyone. Tom |

Tom I'm going to take a complete guess on this one. Since the pan is aluminum, could it be possible that it was stripped out, then re-threaded, for use with your different plug? |

Tom My '05 came with hex head drain plug. I think it took a 3/4 end wrench to get it out. AFAIK, the Jeep had only received dealer service. . . including all fluid changes. Whatever threading it had mated perfectly to a Fumoto. |

Sir Sam is a infamous Colorado CRD'er and general know it all, but good. He has a thread for noobs: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=54207 He also has posted and posts the factory service manual. A little mouthy but not a bad guy at all. He fits in very well here. |
