Level is at high mark on dip stick. Should I consider draining a little out Id rather do that than have an issue with it going up ccv. If it aint broke dont fix it? |

You added .6 quarts too much... Our CRDs take 6.4 quarts, total. The rest will go up the CCV and be burned, or you can drain the excess. |

I would suggest draining a little bit, because it will end up going through your ccv and your turbo if no provent. If you have a Provent,it will fill up quicker than if you had 6.4 qts from what I've experienced. The dipstick can be deceiving. |

I know that the idea that overfilling the oil will cause it to go out the CCV is well accepted, however no one has ever delivered an explanation as to why that would be. My own observation has in fact shown no difference in the speed of oil consumption down the entire range from full to add. Every other engine on planet earth manifests an overfilled oil pan with oil whipped into foam, blown out seals, seized bearings, and in the case of diesels with PCVs, a run away engine. I postulate (respectfully) that we keep perpetuating a myth by telling and retelling this story that the full mark on the dipstick causes excess oil through the CCV. If there is an explanation based on actual, accepted physics, I of course yield to it, even if it doesn't match my own results. Please don't flame too hard. |

The issue isn't so much as to where it goes, but rather THAT it goes somewhere. You can speculate all you want as to where it goes. The fact is, if you add oil to the upper full mark, it will "disappear" down about 1/4 inch on the ole dip stick. |

Please don't flame too hard. it isn't a myth, when I got my CRD new it came with free oil changes for 60,000 miles, every 5k The first 4 oil changes it was filled to the full mark on the dipstick and it FLEW thru the oil, needed a quart added every 500 miles or so to stay at the full. the dealer started to track and investigate it when they were told by DC that the dipsticks are not accurate and to only add 6.4 quarts of oil. So starting that day it has only ever gotten 6.5 quarts and it has never lost a drop of oil. Now that the 60 k free changes are past I change the oil every 10K and never a drop low from the mark we made on the dipstick when we filled it with 6.4 quarts the first time after we were told. |

Sorry to hijack, but I have a semi-related oil question. Do any of you notice significant oil drips from your CRD? My driveway is starting to look like a freaking Dalmation with all the spots... |

See, this is what I'm talking about. Most of the stories are similar. There is no logic to them. If you had been burning oil because of filling to the full mark, you would have used the first half quart rapidly and once equilibrium was achieved, abnormal oil use would have stopped. Something to think about, is that all new engines burn through some oil until they are broken in. The CRD is said to take 30K-40K or more for proper ring seating. Until then it will use more than average oil. ALL oil breaks down somewhat, makes it past the rings and flashes of the cylinder wall in the course of 10 thousand miles, synthetic or not. The Turbo gets VERY hot during normal operation as well, this causes a significant amount of oil to evaporate as well as become mist from the oil slingers. If you claim that you don't burn through a drop of oil in ten K, I call BS. Half a quart or even more is usual to replace during that interval, depending on how many cold starts you make. That goes for ALL engines. |

My driveway is starting to look like a freaking Dalmation with all the spots... They don't usually leak past the main seals. Most oil drips are from the turbo drain back line. Check there first. They can have bad problems if the line breaks away. |

If so that might be where the oil is coming from. |

Rixram wrote: Can you give me a pointer on this, please? Top, bottom, back, trans-dimensional, etc? The oil return line is underneath the turbo charger, on the right hand side of the motor towards the back. You will probably have to get underneath the vehicle to see it. If it is leaking, there will be oil all over the side of the block under the turbo. KJ 119 also had a good suggestion. Is your elephant hose dripping? |

I replaced the hoses and now the oil blows through the turbo rather than drip on ground. |

The oil drips seem to be coming from fairly far back. I'll be able to take a peek this weekend. |

Very simple. BTW my crd took just under 8 qts to reach the full mark on teh dipstick, that's how badly off teh mark the dipstick is. |

The answer to using oil is not to put more in than the required fill. That would be like me putting more money into my 401K than I already am because it's losing money. You may need to look elsewhere...one place being a dirty air filter, which will for reasons beyond my expertise, cause the oil to be siphoned into the turbo. I blew through the oil at one point and was concerned that my engine was giving up the ghost. I mentioned it to gmtcd and he pm'd me to check my air filter...that was it. Changed it and no more oil consumption. I miss that guy. |

BTW my crd took just under 8 qts to reach the full mark on teh dipstick, that's how badly off teh mark the dipstick is. Yes I read your post. If your particular engine does indeed take 8 quarts to reach the F mark, I could buy that, as I'm sure that there is some variation between engines. I also read this post on 4/26/06: cerich wrote: The manager instructed his mechanic to drain, change filter and add exactly 6.4qts. When I picked it up I popped the hood and checked the oil, it was showing 1/8" below the min mark. With a smile I pointed that out and he lost it. The CRD then had it's new 0w40 mobile one drained, filter off, new one on and a pissed off mechanic insisting he followed his instructions. Upon verified refill of 6.4qts the dang thing showed at the same point on the dipstick.... The range from "Full" to 1/8" under add is NOT 1.5 quarts! 1.5 quarts should be off of the stick. That combined with your statement that you don't use even a drop of oil below 6.4 quarts in ten thousand miles smacks of exaggeration. Still, no one has come up with a reason why the CRD would blow more oil through the CCV if over filled. My own rig uses exactly 7 quarts to reach "Full" on the dip stick including a new filter (slightly more when I use the M1-301). If the oil were up to the level of the crank throw, the oil would be whipped into foam and 1 quart used in 500 miles would be the least of your worries. |
