Do our CRDs not have a chip?

My used 06 CRD came with only one key and it cost a bunch, something like $150 from the dealer. Once I had two I bought one off the internet for about $75 and programmed it,it is PN 05189230AA and it works just fine for remote access. Also got a 'plain' key for about $25 and programmed that, it does not have the remote opening but will start the CRD in an emergency. Got to have two keys to program one yourself. Get a cheap 'plain' key and keep it for emergencies and to program a replacement if you ever need to.

What information can you add about the "plain key", did you get it from a lock shop, dealer or www?

Thanks
Joe

I bought a plain key (no buttons for door locks) on the internet. This key had the chip inside and I programmed it according to the instructions sent with the key. I then went to a lock smith and had him cut the key metal using one of mine as a blank. The key cost about $ 20 and the cutting about $ 2. This was done instead of $ 150 for a key from the dealer. I use the key as a spare on a lanyard around my neck when I am out in the boonies. The only drawback to this method is that you MUST have the two original keys in order to program the plain key. If you only have 1 OEM key you have to go to dealer to get a second OEM key as the programming for the plain key requires 2 OEM keys for the process to work.

I bought one keyless entry key and two regular keys from mykeyless and transponderisland. I don't remember the cost but I believe it was $30 for the keyless and $5 for the regular one. The keyless was just a blank, with no guts, I used the internals from my key that the plastic ring broke off of. Wally world would not cut the keys for me because they had a chip in them, but Lowes did. The guy at Lowes said that their cutting service is free, normally people buy the keys there though, and did not charge me for cutting the keys. I took one of the regular keys to the dealer to have programmed, $30. I then used it and my old broken keyless entry key to program the other regular one, and then transplanted the guts into the keyless entry key and programed it with the other two. The reason that I bought to regular keys is so that we will have three keys, and if we lose one I can buy a replacement cheap off of ebay and program it myself.

When I had to get new keys for my Contour SVT (I lost all my keys) I used, I think it was streetkeyz.com. You give them the VIN (IIRC) and they send the cut key to the locksmith. You then make an appointment with the locksmith to program it. It ain't cheap, but is darn convenient.

I went to mykeyless and they had nothing for the 2006 model. I went to transponderisland and you have to be a locksmith to order from there. Any suggestions for reasonable extra key for my 2006 CRD? It only came with one key.

I have two original keys, but would like a 3rd, and was also turned down at Wal*Mart. Just for the sake of clarity: the CRD really won't start without an electronic key? I just wondered because in duckboy18's picture, the original key does not appear to have a chip or anything else inside besides the transmitter for the electric locks, and I could care less about that. (In fact I HATE the electric locks.) Has anyone tried with just a basic $1 metal key? They work on plenty of other modern cars. How would the Jeep know the difference?

PCM Knows , its in the theft alarm on vehicle

If you want key that will work without remote functions;
you can use standard mopar grey transponder key.
ive seen these for 10 bucks on ebay

has to be programed dealer or owners manual.

I just ordered a key remote from the site suggested by Cerick. However, they have had 16 items of negative feedback in just the past month, a little worrisome. I guess everybody from LOST has been satisfied with them?

Thanks,

DOC

Just to clarify something. While messing with my code scanner I somehow got my imobilizer confused and it didn't recognize the key. IT WILL start but only run for a second or two  Disconnecting the battery set thing stright

I just got a 2006 crd, it came with 1 key. just started looking but found them for $87.50 including shipping @ Originalkeyless.com
Also I read that with a scanner and 1 key you can still program a new key yourself. I E mailed for clearification if they mean a scantool computer reader. hopefully they do.

Bob.

Unless these guys have a new trick you'll need to take it to a dealer since you only have one working key. this has been coverdd more then a few times.

But there are some locksmiths that have a device that will program your jeep.

For far less money you can get a regular key without the remote that has the necessary chip that must also be programed. I suggest you at least get one non remote key so you'll always have two so you can program your own per the instructions in the owners manual 8)
