I garage vehicles for months. Place on stands and start every so often.

Okay, the Jeep has been without coolant since April. Of course I haven't started it since that time.
When I get the part to put it back together, how should I start it for the first time?

Coolant back in, hand crank engine, prime fuel, turn key?

If you hand crank, you won't be able to spin it over fast enough to build up oil pressure.
But here is the good news, since you don't live on Venus, the temperature has not gotten hot enough to work the oil out of the bearings and should be OK.
When I have an engine that has been parked for years I like to pressure feed oil into the oil gallery. Grease guns make great hydraulic pumps if you pull out the spring loaded plunger that forces the grease into the pump, hold the main chamber up, pour in the oil and pump the handle. Also I like to dump oil onto the cam lobes.
Since it has been months and not years, you should be OK.

Good to know. Thank you.

Probably could make a dedicated version if you cut off the plunger and sealed the cap with the hole in it.
Does the Libby have a fitting for this type of homemade hydraulic pump?

Oil pressure sending unit is 18 NPT, same as grease gun.

Good idea.
Even though it has only been months, not years, I still may do this anyway.

I'm with FLman - turn the key.

Modern engines aren't as prone to problems like the older less-sealed engines used to be, and if you run synthetic oil in them, then they have very little chance of losing the oil coating anyway.

Perfect example - My blown engine. Ok, NOT because it was blown :jester: but because the idiot mechanic left the block sitting OUTSIDE without the cylinder head on it for 3 months. It got FILLED with water. Of course anything that wasn't normally an oil surface rusted if it was the right metal. HOWEVER... The oil pan was not on the block, and when I knocked it over and started pulling parts off... Everything UNDER the pistons was still coated in oil and had NOT rusted. Except for cylinder #1, it actually came apart rather easily and even rotated freely!

That is the most severe test I can think of to see if synthetic oil will remain on engine parts. I have several other vehicles that don't move that often - 2 motorhomes and a 94 Town and Country minivan with over 250k on its original engine. All have synthetic oil in them... And all start up when I ask them to with just turning the key.

Don't forget the coolant bleeding procedure. It's different than normal (which you probably already know) but I'm with the others. As long as you didn't drain the oil, you should be fine. I might put the battery on the trickle charger the night before I start it up, though. Always good to have a freshly topped-off battery.

50% G-05, pop off the plug on the top (passenger side) of radiator and fill from the reservoir.
Close plug, finish fill, start engine and check level.
Check for leaks.

Just a guess, haven't done this job yet.

Not exactly. it's self-purging from the overfill canister. I haven't done it either, but here's the FSM details:

REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM

(1) Tighten the radiator draincock and the cylinder
block drain plug(s) (if removed).
CAUTION: Failure to purge air from the cooling system
can result in an overheating condition and
severe engine damage.

(2) Fill cooling system with the antifreeze mixture
(Refer to LUBRICATION & MAINTENANCE/FLUID
TYPES - DESCRIPTION). Fill pressure bottle to service
line and install cap.

NOTE: The engine cooling system will push any
remaining air into the coolant bottle within about an
hour of normal driving. As a result, a drop in coolant
level in the pressure bottle may occur. If the
engine cooling system overheats and pushes coolant
into the overflow side of the coolant bottle, this
coolant will be sucked back into the cooling system
ONLY IF THE PRESSURE CAP IS LEFT ON THE
BOTTLE. Removing the pressure cap breaks the
vacuum path between the two bottle sections and
the coolant will not return to cooling system.

(3) With heater control unit in the HEAT position,
operate engine with pressure bottle cap in place.

(4) Add coolant to pressure bottle as necessary.
Only add coolant to the pressure bottle when
the engine is cold. Coolant level in a warm
engine will be higher due to thermal expansion.
NOTE: The coolant bottle has two chambers. Coolant
will normally only be in the outboard (larger) of
the two. The inboard chamber is only to recover
coolant in the event of an overheat or after a recent
service fill. The inboard chamber should normally
be empty. If there is coolant in the overflow side of
the coolant bottle (after several warm/cold cycles of
the engine) and coolant level is above cold full
when cold, disconnect the end of the overflow hose
at the fill neck and lower it into a clean container.
Allow coolant to drain into the container until emptied.
Reconnect overflow hose to fill neck.

So essentially add coolant to reservoir, drive with heat on and next morning (now cool) top up.

I wonder what the quickly removable plug on top of the rad is for?

Perhaps you fill the radiator first, then cap it and fill the bottle (per above).
