Howdy. Another post recommends using Wix 51773 as a larger capacity oil filter for the CRD. The O ring is slightly larger than stock and filters 32 microns. The recommended filters 21 microns. My parts guy recommends the 51516.

Use the 51515. Direct fit, larger capacity, and same rating.

I have a question regarding the need for a larger or different oil filter than the OEM filter.

Why would there be a need for an alternate or larger oil filter than the OEM filter?

Because we don't, no one has ever proved a thing by putting on a larger filter.

The direct replacement filter from Wix is 51516 and from Amsoil is EAO34

The larger from wix is 51515 and from Amsoil is EAO15

When I asked about technical specs on the Amsoil filters, here is what their tech guy replied

"Internal specifications such as By Pass Valve, Anti Drain Back valve etc. may be found by looking up the Wix equivalent at http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/index.asp . (AMSOIL Filters must have these same specifications. Only the media used is different.)"

I would not use a EAO26 (which cross references with Wix 51773) or a Wix 51773 because of the 32 micron rating.

I spent a bit of time last week researching the filters on the Wix website, and the only two that appeared to be appropriate for our jeeps are 51515 and 51516

Does our OEM filter really need to be reengineered?

Are we trying to redesign what the Daimler / Chrysler engineering department recommends, or more so what VM Motori recommends for their engine?

There must be a good case for this, otherwise the issue wouldn't arise so often.

Yeah does it matter? how many of us have issues with oil filtration? I just use the NAPA gold filter and am not worried about it. when I got mine there was a Mopar filter on.

Where did you find that the EAO26 had a 32 micron rating? It seems to me that all the EAO series are 15 microns.

A larger oil filter expands your oil capacity.
A larger oil filter should have the ability to filter more oil.

Both those traits should equate to cooler, cleaner oil that allows you to extend your oil
change interval.
Proving that is another matter.

I use a Mobil 1 M-301 filter. Its bigger and holds an additional 1/2 quart than stock.
Does this mean that my engine will last longer and never explode?

I like to run the M1-301 also, because it's bigger I can just throw in 7qts and not have to measure when I change it.

Now that proves something, finally a good reason to use the large filter, saves you the BS of measuring. In the good old days cars and trucks usually took an even number of quarts. I guess metrics played into the fractionation of quarts?

Best reason I've heard yet. Claims of cooler and cleaner oil are dubious at best.

I use the NAPA 1773, like the wix. I don't KNOW it is better or worse, just seemed like a good idea because it is bigger. But eventually I will make my own decisions, not copy what others do :goink:

I stand corrected, they are all indeed 15 micron. I was just going on what the tech guy said and did not realize since the media is different, the micro rating would be different.

I use the WIX 51515, I like the 7 quart capacity, easier to measure out and the price is about the same as the 51516 at Fleet Filter. Every couple of years I put in an order with my dad and brother. I buy all the filters I need for all of our vehicles. They're almost half of the local Napa store and then they take another 10-15% off when we hit certain price points. Their shipping is cheap and 2-3 days. With the 7 quart, capacity, I just dump it in and I am done. Don't have a half bottle laying around which is nice since I don't seem burn much in 6,000 miles. The capacity/cooling business may be a myth, but on my ford 6.9 board they use the over-sized powerstroke filter for the same reasons. It seems like it adds a quart of oil to my truck's capacity. Can't do it with the merc, it uses a canister style.

I posted this somewhere on here before. The best filter for the money is the Motorcraft. Its constructed the same as a Purolator 1 and filters the same. They can be bought for as little as 2.50 on sale.

I've been using the Fleetguard LF 3339 filter. Get them cheap through work.
