Considering a piller pod and getting a boost gauge and and EGT gauge. How much boost does the CRD make is stock form and then how much can it make once it's been modified? I don't want to get a boost gauge that suits the current situation but will not keep up with future endeavors. |

You should not need a gauge that reads over 25-26 psi, with the stock turbo. The stock turbo peaks around 25 for short periods of time, but can not normally exceed 20 psi. At least that's what i see on my gauge. |

Same question here... what PSI is stock boost vs tuned boost? |

It varies depending a lot on which version of stock you are (F37 detune or not) and which tune (Inmotion, GDE eco or GDE hot), but a 30 psi max gauge, which are pretty common, should cover us all. |

I agree with 30 PSI gauge being plenty. Was curious as to what they put out stock and then chipped (average is fine) Are we talking 10 to 15 PSI stock and 20 to 25 tuned??? I have no idea yet and have not found many posts discussing boost levels. |

Mostly because for some reason around here everyone thinks its ok to take a chance with their other than stock tuned engine and not run any gauges. |

I fianally got around to installing my Boostgauge. Seeing around 18 PSI max at WOT depending on RPM. Does this seem normal with Echo tune and TCM tune? Seems low to me, was expecting 20 to 22 psi. Anyone know the stock boost numbers? |

At least that's what i see on my gauge. I very recently asked this question to GDE specificially regarding their Eco tune and got the same answer as CRDMiller states above. A note on 30 PSI boost gauges... All the boost-only gauges I could find in a 0-30 PSI full sweep electrical gauge were all on the very expensive end. All the "budget" gauges were either mechanical or 0-60 PSI electrical gauges. Since I wanted an electrical gauge, I ended up going with a Glow Shift 60mm 30 PSI boost/vacuum gauge. The 1/4 of the gauge showing vacuum will be useless, but I figured it was better than the 2/3 of the gauge that would be useless on a 0-60 boost only. (And who knows, maybe the gauge will read vacuum for a split second on shutdown due to the FCV...?) |

I went with VDO Vision Chrome series 0-30 gauge from Egauges.com for around $35. I have used VDO in all 3 of my VW TDI's and also on my current Passat 2.0T Gasser. So this is my 5th car with VDO boostgauges. Just need to wire up the lighting and all will be done. Anyone know a good/easy location to tap into for lighting that will work off the dimmer? |

30 PSI is the best choice. If you put it on the upstream side of the inter cooler, you will get a higher reading than if you tap into the manifold. Since I want to see what the engine gets, I put mine in the intake manifold. But if you want two boost gauges, put one on both sides of the inter cooler

Only pillar pods I've seen are ones that require you to remove the grab handle. |

I put in the Prosport electronic gauges which contain a peak alarm warning level you can set and also a peak memory to record the highest achieved figure. For boost, and I run the GDE ECO tune, the highest level achieved in over a year and a half on the Tune is: 24psi. My sensor is in the top of the intake manifold. As GDE remap the boost points in the Tunes it would probably be a good idea to get some direct input from them on what they did and why, but as said above a 30psi gauge would be plenty. |

Tapped into top/side of manifold. I have always found the CRD to be sluggish, even with the tune it is slow and fuel economy not great.. Cannot get over 19 MPG. (moslty city driving however) All filters replaced, no dragging brakes. I think it should be putting out more boost but have nothing to compare to. Need stock numbers? Used mounting cup: http://www.egauges.com/vdo_indA.asp?PN=240-016 With this gauge: http://www.egauges.com/vdo_ind.asp?Type ... PN=150-194 In hindsight I should have mounted the cup on the A-Pillar instead of dash. |

Other than turbo lag, no surprise, I've never found the CRD to be sluggish with or without a tune. Radman, 19mpg in town may be pretty good for your location during the winter given temps and winter fuel. Down here where neither items are an issue I'm getting 22-24 in town (worst was 19.1 with a known bad tstat-10 mile trip runs) and 31-33 highway but that's with the viscous heater relay pulled and the GDE EcoTune. Prior to the tune I was getting 18 - 28 mpg intown/hwy respectively. You might want to check your turbo>intercooler>engine hose and air box to turbo hoses for leaks and clean the MAP sensor per the NOOB guide. |

Radman it sounds like you may have a boost leak. I know at least two people that have had intercooler leaks that don't cause CELs or codes but reduce performance. On one an intercooler tube was cracked near where the top hose from the turbo enters the intercooler, and could only be seen when the fan shroud was removed and the intercooler pulled for testing - the radiator guys fixed it with epoxy putty (much cheaper than a replacement). |

Thanks guys! MAP and MAF have both been cleaned. I checked all hoses, typically there would be some oil seepage if there was a leak. I will look over it again later this week. I know the TC is showing signs of shudder occasionally so maybe all the power is not making it through the drivetrain??? But I would think this would mostly have an effect under lockup. |

Assuming you have OEM turbo>intercooler>engine hoses there have been several reports of tears/holes on the bottom side with little oil leakage (other than normal weaping thru the hose). Those tears/holes were only visible upon removal of the hose(s) and inspection outside the vehicle. The air box to turbo hose can rot down near the turbo where the fitting for the hockey puck connects. That failure is typically on the bottom and usually cannot be seen but can be felt. Stoutdog found his was gone when he removed it for better access to install kap's tstat modification. |

If you're looking for a boost gauge, here are my thoughts on the GlowShift 60mm electronic Boost/Vac gauge (30 PSI) ![]() The gauge is very nice - well made, accurate (as far as I can tell), quick to respond, and has some nice features like overboost warning, peak recall, etc. It also has 10 different color settings, which was a plus so I could match the factory backlight colors. The vacuum portion of the gauge is obviously useless, but their only electronic boost-only gauge was 60 PSI, which would have not made a lot of sense for the KJ. Not sure how I feel about the mounting location. It was great from an install standpoint. Extremely easy to modify the vent and I was able to tap into all of the stereo wiring for constant, keyed power, and the dimmer. It just looks a little dorky... oh well. |
