The dealer says I have a stretched piston. I don't know how that happens on cruise control but i need a short block or long block because nobody can rebuild it because they cant get the parts.
Got Help?

that is stupid as anything

the 2.8 is wet sleeve, that means buy a piston and a sleeve(generally speaking, however get the cam looked at because if a piston got "stretched" the cam likely got bent). Granted it would be a HUGE PITA to get those parts here in the US, however easy enough to order from a European distribution point or special order from the VM distributor here in the US.

Start here with a phone call and a email, bet they can point you in the right direction

What are the symptoms you are having? What were you doing at the time? How many miles are on the jeep? Give us something to work with.

I wouldn't trust ANY dealer in the US to diagnose a CRD issue.

What exactly is a "stretched piston?" I'm with UFO here. I wouldn't trust ANY Chrysler dealer to correctly diagnose that the SUN was going to come up tomorrow.

Tell us what the symptoms were, and 99% of the time we will be able to tell you what REALLY happened, and how to fix it for (most likely) a LOT less than a new engine.

Take it from me, I have been one of only 2 or three people to lose the engine on these CRDs. The engine is a tough beast, it doesn't fail politely. If the engine truly was bad / gone... You wouldn't need Chrysler to BS you about it, you would already know.

That's a pretty expensive conclusion from just reading a computer diagnostic screen. Depending on your miles, I can believe the timing belt messing up the top half :banghead: but you've just plopped down a very big stink bomb :dizzy: with very little to offer or back up except that you had the cruise on. 95 mph? 100 mph?

Because their was so little training for this beast and because the dealers see so little of them, it truly is the red-headed stepchild of DCX. It is not a Hurst Jeepster that they would all want to see and baby, it is a Beta test that they walked away from in the middle of D-C divorce (is the "X" prophetic :grim: ) followed by a hostile government takeover and liquidation.

I think that you would be better served by taking this to a diesel mechanic who enjoys the novelty of this very unique machine (posted many times on this site) and that actually wants to find the problem before parts get thrown at it. But what do I know, for all we know from reading the post the top half has already come off and the mechanic is staring at 4 pistons.

Good luck, I'm sorry misfortune has blown your way.

The mechanic said the piston is slapping the head. Stretched piston meaning the wrist pin hole. Yes the heads are off. 93k miles and it was on cruise at 78mph. i was getting ready to schedule the timing belt at 100k so when it started making noise it sounded like a belt coming apart and slapping. A month before I had just had a front left tire partially separate and it kinda sounded like that except no vibration and the new tires have only 500 miles on them so i knew that wasn't it. i assumed it was the timing belt. i shifted into neutral, turned the engine off and coasted to the shoulder of the highway. i called my son with the flat bed.
i called the dealer and told him what happened and he open up the timing cover and the belt was fine. he thought it must be the water pump so I had prepaid for the water pump, timing belt and belt tensioner. he installed them cranked it up and heard the noise and thats when the did the surgery to the head to locate the piston. I've got a thousand into it already and the heads are still off.
I believe the mechanic is right. I live 30 miles in the country so i have not looked at it.
They told me $7k+ for a new engine.
I found a salvaged engine in michigan today for $4,300 with 60K but I don't know if they would install it.
Any more ideas?

about the parts, I asked a local engine rebuild shop and they said they didn't have a listing for the engine parts but if I took the engine out and brought them the engine and parts they would rebuild it.
So i scratched that idea.

this might sound dumb. I don't intend it that way..
if the wrist pin hole is elongated, are the pistons still in the block? if so how did they determine the piston was hitting the head? dents in the head? bent valves? imprints in the piston?
just wondering..running at 78mph should not have caused this..unless something else happened
maybe the timing belt stretched?

I know my wife's jeep has been faster the 78mph.. while towing..uphill in CO..ok so it wasn't a large load..

I would find it hard to believe that parts cannot be found. I think Jeep is required by law to supply them for 10yrs after production ends. but don't quote me..

They consider "buy a new engine" as "supply parts" and don't really get bothered by more than that. Unfortunately, because they are no longer Daimler_Chrysler and are now Chrysler-Fiat... Don't expect them to actually honor that law either.

Daimler-Chrysler was the one subject to that parts-availability clause... Chrysler-Fiat is a totally new and unrelated company that bought ONLY the assets and NONE of the liabilities of the dead company. Isn't contract corporate law fun?

Your mechanic is funny however. You really need to SEE the piston moving differently, and even that wouldn't require a NEW engine - Just replace the ONE piston / sleeve / and connecting rod assembly. However, I have another point to think about - IF the piston is moving in a way that it isn't supposed to... Your associated rocker arms in that section of the head WILL BE BROKEN. This is an interference motor. The valves have to move out of the way when the piston comes to TDC, or they will be slammed closed by the piston hitting them, breaking the rocker arms. This happens when the timing jumps, smashing the rocker arms (the designed failure point) and NOT hurting anything else.

Impacts should be clearly visible on the piston surface as fresh scratches. 30 miles is nothing - GET TO THE DEALER and look for yourself into the top of this motor. Something decidely fishy is going on, and you do NOT want to let someone with only a 30 minute video about this engine "learn" on your expense.

If it was me, I would be sleeping at the dealer and looking over their shoulder every moment until I had an answer that made logical sense AND was agreed by the brain trust here. There is not a single problem with these engines that we haven't discussed here or figured out... And we are ALL the ONLY people in the USA that truly give a carp about the Liberty CRD and understanding every bolt in the platform.

If you need Engine parts, I believe that Mercruiser uses the 2.8 liter engine in their inboard/outboards. So if you have a mercruiser dealer nearby that can be an effective way to get both parts and service for your jeep.

X2 that is a new one on me, is that like the muffler bearing going bad?

Drive you Jeep out of there ASAP and don't never go back!

update...the dealer called and the price factory reman of the long block is 4,800+ install+1,000 i already got in the exploratory and parts=7K.
He said 12 month 12k mile warranty.
The used one has 60K miles, no warranty and $4,300.
The dealer said they could not get the connecting rods from the factory period so they cannot do the rebuild.
Same thing my local reman shop said.
I think GM bought VM Motori for their Cadillac sts v6 CRD's(I read it somewhere).
I talked to the diesel mechanic and confirmed it is the #2 piston rod, could be crank bearing or wrist pin bearing. He said he rolled the crank till the piston was at the top. he rolled the crank more and it didn't go down and he pushed it down an inch.
I think thats conclusive.

Post subject:  Re: 2005 Liberty CRD 2.8 Limited ...Disaster...

I'm hoping the "inch" of movement is an exaggeration. Perhaps it's simply a spun rod bearing. Until the rod is out, you cannot tell if it's the rod that is broken (not "stretched") or if the rod bearing or wrist pin is missing or broken. Your cylinder head must be a mess in any case...

Shure sounds like a broken Rod to me. most likely a manufacturer defect. Push it some and see if the Factory will not split the costs. Nothing to loose. If the Dealer is a stand up guy, he should back you.
Best of luck: Bob

Not true. :dead:
I'm in the same boat as you minus the exploratory fee.

Did it sound anything like mine? You do any troubleshooting before you turned it in,or hung around the shop while they were working on it?
Tell everything you know please.
