so i cut off the stereo wiring harness in order to install the new head unit. matched up the wires from the jeep and the head unit and nothing...ive pulled it all off and will start again, all it takes is for two wires not to be crimped properly right.

THE BIG PROB IS THAT AFTER HAVING THE DASH PULLED APART FOR THE INSTALL MY INTERIOR LIGHTS WONT COME ON, MY REMOTE KEY DOESNT WORK(locking doors and tailgate open), WHEN I TURN THE KEY TO ACCESSORIES (one click before cranking it over) THE SPEEDO AND RPM NEEDLES GO FROM 0 TO MAX AND THEN BACK TO 0, YOU KNOW HOW YOU CAN TURN THE CAR OFF AND HAVE THE HEADLIGHTS GO OFF AUTO...DOESNT WORK EITHER WTF!

the jeep starts and runs fine, i can turn wipers, indicators, headlights on etc as usual but when i pull the key out ive got nothing, cant lock it, use interior lights...

i hope this is an easy fix????

not for nothin' but they make wiring harness that you can prewire then plug into the factory harness. When you went all hacky/slashy you shorted constant 12 to ground, illumination etc.

My recommendation would be to undo everything you've done and start replacing the blown fuses. Hopefully, you left enough wire to repair the original harness. or pay the car stereo the $ they wanted to install it in the first place... just sayin'

Since aftermarket wire colors have nothing to do with OEM wires who knows what you've done. The most common mistake of the hacky/slashy method is connecting ground to the illumination wire since this wire rests at ground when the lights are off but go to +12V when the headlights come on.

My guess is the dome light fuse is blown as well as the illum fuse, hopefully everything works when you replace these or this could end up being a very expensive radio installation.

Let us know how it works out and this should probably be in the electrical section.

Rule #1 when working on a vehicle:

NEVER cut a factory wiring harness behind the dash.

I learned that when I was like, 16.

x2 on checking all the fuses and also x2 on cutting factory harnesses (if you can avoid it). If you are proficient in electronics and automotive troubleshooting, then sure, go to town.

You didn't mention if your battery was disconnected when you did the work. If not, then the fuses seem the most likely. If it was, I'd try returning the wires all back to stock and seeing if you can get everything to work with the old head unit before trying anything more involved.

yes 99% of the work was done with the batt disconnected. There could be a chance that wires touched whilst it was but disconnecting it was one of the first things i did. Am trying to find a blown fuse now though then will try and restore the harness back on.
thanks all

They do make a harness to go from factory to after market so no hacking needed. also if you buy from the right places (Crutchfield) they are included in the purchase for the vehicle you intend to install it in upon purchase. Also tech support vai phone is free...... I would not buy a DIY strereo any place else. think about that for next time.

Could it have something to do with the amp? When I was looking at my after market kit, I remember there being some confusion about the amp wires. I asked the guys at Best Buy before I turned anything on, and he told me I was lucky because I would have blown the amp or something like that.

And when you think Rule #1 does not apply Rule#2 states to see Rule #1 :goink:

I can't remember how many used VW's I have owned where some clown butchured up the wiring for the radio :frankie:
VW radio's have had diagnostic testing abilities and are wired into the diagnostic port for at least ten years. It will check the speakers antenna and so forth with the VW scan tool. Adding a after market radio causes problems :ALONE:
It's possible that Chrysler's Star Scan or drib tool is the same.

JOSH, YOU'RE WELCOME
:)

On the topic of harnesses, I have an e150 conversion van that my in-laws bought new. I was troubleshooting strange audio issues, when I noticed they had strung lamp-cord (power cable) all over the place and wire-nutted stuff together. I made a trip to the local junkyard and yanked the entire audio harness group from the dash (amazingly intact) and all the problems went away, and looked better since there was no lamp-cord in the dash anymore.
