Post subject:  Noob with basic glow plug question
Hi,
Just bought an 06 Sport with 20K. I going to follow Sir Sam's noob guide this weekend.
The glow plug indicator in dash does not light up. It's been warm here, so Jeep starts ok. When starting, I've been waiting 10 to 20 seconds before engaging starter.
How do I find out if glow plugs are working or light is just out.

You should not have to wait that long, once the lights in the dash go out you are good to go.

20k? Nice find. When it is warm, my GP light does not go one either. It starts right away.

I bought mine in September of '05 and thought that the seatbelt light (the red one) was the glow plug light (like it was on Mom and Dad's 70's era MB). Until I read the owners manual a couple of times. :dizzy: Then it got cold and I saw the actual glow plug light. :ROTFL:

We've all been noobs once.

Thanks for the info. I'll look for the glow plug when it gets cold.
I don't have a manual, yet. Dealer is getting one for me.

Mine don't come on in this weather either. I got mine last August and was told to look for the glow plug light before starting it. I thought I was the throttle control light :ROTFL: :ROTFL: then I went and read the manual. It's an Orange curly line looking thing. Mine will come on if its say below 50 or lower. I never see it in summer and just get in and start it like a gas there is no need to wait like when its cold in winter

You might see the glow plug light flash on for a fraction of a second when the engine is cold and the air temp is under 60f.
Even below zero the indicator light only comes on for a few seconds.

Jeep has a special place where they hid the manual on the Liberties :seuss:
Open the glove box and look for a small shelf at the very top. You might find a kaki green canvas bag :BANANA:

The glow plug light rarely comes on unless it's cold then if you blink you'll miss it. Chrysler used Ceramic glow plugs and there are problems with them. In a effort to minimize damadge and waranty claims, they have changed (shortened) the gp timing to make them last longer. That results in longer then really necesary crank times when it's cooler or cold when they are needed :juggle: The correct thing to do would have been like VW did and replace them all with metal ones. Of course VW wants to sell diesel vehicles here and our Crd's were just a "market test" :oops: Thanks again bean counters :furious:

Don't worry about your glow plugs. When they fail, you'll definitely know because you'll have a MIL. It is not getting cold enough in CO for the glow plugs to be activiated. You don't need 20-30 seconds. Just wait for the light to go out and you are good to go. I usually wait a little longer so my lift pump has fully done its thing and pressurized the fuel line.

Speaking of glow plugs, I replaced mine earlier this year along with a new wiring harness. I now have a #3 glow plug failure code :-( The first set lasted almost 70k miles and not even 10k miles later, I have another bad glow plug. Why couldn't it be an easy one.
