I have a 2006 CRD, I don't see water buildup as the box does have a horizontal snorkel and a water baffle. What would be the benefit of the 02-03 airbox mod? I already changed to an AMSOIL filter, changed to AMSOIL oil and filter, done the ORD and EHM mods. T-Day I plan on the magnaflow muffler change. Bill |

The air box mod was a early one to cut down on the amount of rain water that could enter the air box and saturate the air filter. I think it was RFCRD that came up with it who has not been here since he traded his off years ago. I have seen signs where some water has been in my airbox but never actually seen it. |

I'd really like to get more air and less BP, I'm also want to remove the CAT with a bypass except the month of inspection. |

Salden: You should post up a picture of your filter for all to see what you have created. mostly I'm curious about mounting the air temp sensor. |

Here we go again but: Don't use a cheese cloth type of filter (like a K&N) on a diesel!!! Ya I know Airraid, K&N, etc. will say other wise, but check out any real diesel forum and you will see that is a big NO. They suck the dirt in way deep into the fabric (hard to really clean) and let way too big of particles through. I guess you could clean it every day and it might be Ok..... |

Amsoil. but how about a pre-stage as part of the air ram? |

I switched from the 2005 factory airbox to the earlier airbox about 40,000 miles ago. The benefits were: Filter life went from 5000 miles to 10,000 (still lousy, the filter is undersized, and I drive a lot on dirt roads) Less water in the filter box during driving in heavy rains. The earlier airbox has the air intake above the headlights, the factory airbox has the air intake at the base of the headlight. Apparently, the 8 inch gain in intake height makes a big difference in how much dust and water is picked up. Due to the amount of driving I do on sandy roads, I just use paper filters. The K & N type filters apparently do a poor job of filtering dust, even though K & N claims they work well. But, other users have run tests that indicate they are marginal. |

The problem with the stock intake is that all the rain water that sheets off the huge front right headlight goes directly into the intake. Take a look behind there and you'll see what I mean. I don't know how the earlier intake improves on that because it points forward also, from the pictures I have seen. Maybe there is something blocking the rain from going directly into it, so it's not so much of a ram air intake. |

The need to change to the V6 filter box is a very old myth here on this forum. I've opened the air box in the heaviest rain to check for a clogged filter and other than a some wet leaves and dirt there was no water buildup. Even if some rain does make it to the filter element, it gets sucked right through in a microsecond. As an experiment I soaked the filter down with a garden hose, revved the engine and there was no detectable moisture in the filter. The volume of air which this engine sucks in while going down the road does not allow the filter to become saturated with water. And if some water gets past the filter while raining, just look at it as if you had a free water injection kit. I can believe wolcott's experience about the filter clogging earlier with the factory airbox vs the V6 box, but unless you constantly drive dirt roads there should be no reason for an upgrade. I drive a fair amount of dirt roads myself but have only had to change the filter with oil changes. |

I am going to take a look after the next few days of tropical deluges, I am laughing about the vision of the huge lens directing all the water into the intake. Did like no one in design see that? Amazing.Thank you for the reply |

Yeah check it out some time. It's a real larf. Took me a while to figure out why there was standing water in the bottom of the air box and the filter was wet after driving in the rain. I think the spray from vehicles in front of you on the interstate is the worst as far as that goes. |

If they trap and hold dust particles as well as Amsoil claims, how can you just clean it out with compressed air? Kind of a contradiction, eh? I use Napa Gold air filters and change every 6k. |

Do you use ClearStream filters in your shopvac or dust collectors? Those definitely can be blown out, and need to be, my Jet filters to 0.5 micron, I have little dust in my overhead air cleaner in the shop at all. But when I do clean the vac and dust collector filters outside, don't be downwind. |

I think the biggest reason to switch to the snorkle airbox is that 8 inches of hieght you gain. If you don't ford any streams then I'm not sure it makes any difference. |

But when I do clean the vac and dust collector filters outside, don't be downwind. What I mean is that if they trap 1 micron particles that well, a mere shop vac isn't going to get it 100% clean. Therefore the filter will be getting more and more clogged over that 100,000mi interval they claim. I think it's ridiculous to run a filter 100,000 miles. I'd rather just put new ones in than run a partly clogged filter for 90,000 miles. |
