So when I bought my Jeep, it had 74,000 miles on it. One of the things I did early on was to pull the MAP sensor and clean it. I'm sure you've all seen the pics that members here have posted of crudded up MAP sensors.. mine was equally bad. You couldn't even see the sensor electrodes.. it was just one solid block of carbon and soot buildup. I cleaned it thoroughly with brake cleaner and gently with a Q-tip and got it almost as good as new. I've put about 13,000 miles on the Jeep since then. I've been running the GDE HOT tune and the EHM the entire time. Been using Shell Rotella 5W40 full syn oil. Just out of curiosity I pulled my MAP sensor to see what it looks like now. It was covered it soot again! It was NOT as bad as when I pulled it the first time... but then again it probably had 74,000 miles on it then and this time it only had 13,000. Personally, I can see how over time.. this thing would soot up just as bad now and it was when the Jeep was stock. I'll bet that if I don't pull it again for 50,000 miles, it'll be a solid block of soot and nastiness again. Just a heads up because a lot of guys assume that the tune and the EHM cure this problem. Truth is, it may not. You still need to check your sensor every so often. |

So you're saying that putting the oil mist back into the intake is a good thing? And it'll keep the sensor cleaner? |

As long as the EGR is disabled, there is no soot for the oil to combine with in order to produce crud. Since you have EHM'd your rig, there is no oil getting into the intake to clean the pre-GDE/EHM gunk out. Remember, engine oil is full of detergents which are very good at softening and dissolving the tarry crap which builds up from a functioning EGR. Reconnect the PCV hose and within ~ ten thousand miles there will be no sign of buildup(depending on how much was already there). There is a big difference between caked up soot and a wet coating of oil in the intake. The first robs performance and impedes MAP function. The latter prevents corrosion and a sticky FCV. |

X2, I have been saying the same thing, all along, the oil does not make your intake dirty. It is the combination of oil and EGR fumes that cause the nasty. |

That's the only thing that makes me run the provent over the stock CCV system. |

Left me with a $500 tab and a week without my Jeep. Hence, why I immediately EHM'd it. This is interesting talk though... |

The original CAC hoses fail whether you have a provent or not. The factory hoses were made of natural rubber or a similar compound which would be softened by even the tinny amount of vapor which made it past the provent. When combined with the very high temperatures coming out of the turbo charger, they simply turned into goo. The replacement hoses are made of a different compound and I'm not aware of any of the updated hoses failing, however there have been a number of Samcos which have failed. My Updated hoses have 145000km and 48000Km with no sign of sweating. |

A number of people have posted about theirs rotting out right where the CCV oil drips down into it. No way around it with the stock setup. |

I'll have to check my intake tube. I've not noticed anything amiss, but then, I haven't really looked too closely at it. |

Looks like I have become one of the sheep. As I searched for the numerous Samcos which have failed, it seems that all of the posts were referring to just a single Samco failure. |

I cleaned mine at ~ 89k. I have ~ 99k now. I am running GDE hot tune and factory intake. I will look at mine and see how it looks. Also, I replaced my intercooler prior to GDE tune (due to a small defect leak) and it didn't have a build up like many(including myself) thought it would. my boost sensor was horrible, but no buildup in intercooler. I am curious after a year now and with stock intake and GDE tune what my MAP sensor looks like. I'll get back to you all. - Mark |

I am under the impression that the GDE tune 100% shuts down the EGR. This is what Kieth told me and one of the main reasons for me to do this mod. I installed the GDE tune at the same time that a new EGR valve was installed. Have been running the EHM for some time before that. I will be pulling the IAT/MAP sensor again, soon, and will be expecting to find it CLEAN. No oil, no soot, what's to gunk it up? BTW-I agree with the owners manual that only clean air belongs in the intake manifold. |

The GDE tune shuts down the EGR in almost all situations. The sole exception, to the best of my knowledge, has something to do with boost pressure release when doing a "tip out" maneuver. Not a freaking clue, that's just what Keith told me a year ago when I purchased my tune. As far as I know, this pressure release function opens the valve the other way... so soot is still not a concern. |
