I saw a black 2005 CRD limited for sale in Midvale Utah. Looks pretty good, spoke with the guy on the phone and he says it runs and drives excellent. I was just wondering if any of you guys were familar with it? It's got higher miles 134K, but the price could be very right. It's located at a lot called, "Auto King" on state street. I'm looking for a back up small SUV for weekends and trips.

Thanks, for any info, if you have any.

That's only high miles if the timing belt has not been changed and sorry no I'm not familiar with it.

I have don't have any info on the Jeep, but I would find out if the timing belt has been changed. If not that is a $1500-2000 job done at a dealer, might be a good negotiating point. At that millage, if it has not been done, and you buy it, it should be done with in 2 or 3 miles of pulling off of the lot(maybe a bit of exaggeration to emphasize my point)

Be sure to ask for documentation, an Uh Huh is not good enough, ask for a receipt for parts and or labor.

The dealer has no idea if the belt has been changed, and I think I have him convinced that is worth a deduction. The price I think I can get it for takes all of that into consideration, and then some. It's the last of the month and I think Cash is going to talk. I'm pretty sure I'd trailer it home.

There's not that many jeep dealers in the Salt Lake valley. Ask where it was purchased. Try to get them to release the service records.

Sounds like the guy may have bought it at auction, in which case he wouldn't know about the timing belt. But unless he chucked the paperwork you should be able to find out.

Let us know what kind of deal you cut. Of course, we all like pics.

Thanks for all the input. The pre-purchase inspection revealed that the pinion seal had gone out and someone had put some miles on it with no fluid. The rear 3rd member is toast. Mechanic is pretty sure with the chunks and stuff floating around that the housing is toast. I was able to talk to the mechanic without the dealer knowing, and found out that the mechanic is quoting about $2K to replace the entire rear axle. The rest of the inspection indicated a really nice car. The mechanic actually seemed impressed. A couple of questions:

1. Is the rear end (ratio primarily) the same as in the 3.7L powered Jeeps?
2. Any idea what an approximate cost to change would be? Parts only, I have access to a diesel shop, and have done all of my own work in the past.

I'm not afraid to work a little to get a good deal, and now I'm thinking about stealing it...

thanks
Jason

The CRD has ABS and ESP so an axle from a 3.7 without these features will be problematic.

MOST used car inventory is from auction BTW.

If by ESP JL means electronic stability program that's a feature of the 2006 CRD not the 2005.

You should be able to find an axle from a pre 2006 gas V6 pretty cheap in a junk yard and it'll swap right in. They ought to be a dime a dozen. Sam was just eye to eye with one here in CO. The ratio you want is 3.73, which all the V6 automatics were. Put a DTT in there while you're at it

Thanks for all the input, guys. I go pick it up Monday. I've already found a used axle from a 70K mile DIESEL here locally. I'm pretty excited to be joining the CRD club. I'll post some pics when I get back with it. I'm pretty sure I'll go ahead and do the timing belt and Water pump, just to be sure. Where do you guys find to be the best place to buy the parts?

Cool, just make sure the axle is from a 2005 if it's from a diesel.

I've not done the change yet, but moparpartsamerica.com was a good place for my fuel/water separator, and my thermostat. Some parts may take a while to get though. Read up.

Well. I did it. 36 hours and 1550 miles later it's in my driveway. It was nicer in person than I expeted. the rear axle is definately toast, it's obvious the front pinion seal was out and it was driven with no fluid. I have already purchased a replacement axle from a 2005 CRD with 53K on it. THe bad rear axle turned into a $3,000 dollar deduction from the dealer who was selling it. It starts up easy, runs smoothly and drives out well (except for the HOWLING rear end). IT's still pretty tight.

Details:
Purchase price $7,000
Rear axle: $900
Timing belt fluids, etc $700
TOTAL $8600 plus a little elbow grease got me a black CRD limited with NAV, leather, heated seats, power everything, sunroof, never been wheeled, new tires, no dents dings or tears. It even has the owners manual and NAV CD!

I'm pretty excited to finally have one. I'm sure that in the next month I'll have a lot of questions, as I do some of the MODS to make it a little more reliable. I am almost certain that I will be getting a GDE eco tune as soon as I have finished the Timing Belt replacement.

Thanks for being such a valuable resource. Let's keep this forum going until the wheels rust out from under my little CRD!

SWEET.

And, somebody has changed the wheels on it too. The CRDs all were shipped with only one style of wheel, and that ain't it. :)

@ libertyCRD: What were the wheels shipped with it? I most commonly see those wheels on libertys, I assumed it was the same for the CRD's

The chromed 5-spoke style was the only one used on the CRDs. Looks like somebody put the painted 6-spokes on yours.

In fact, my Jeep came with 17" premium chrome wheels according to the Limited package it had...but the CRD package caused the wheels to be downgraded to the 16" regular wheels.
