Greetings all,

Just completed the ORM/Elephant Mod before a thousand mile roundtrip to Vegas. Very pleased with what seems to be a 2 mpg increase, but concerned about oil loss. I guess it's sensible given the nature of the mod that some oil would escape, but after reading oil dipstick, it went from a topped off reading to about a centimeter below the low oil mark on dipstick.

Is this normal? I just don't remember hearing anything about this possibility in the modification description.

Some '05 CRDs have the dipstick marked wrong and topped off is over full causing the oil to vanish fast. Some have to ride on the add mark not to be over filled and waste oil. Others may have some suggestions, but I would see if the oil loss greatly diminishes when it reaches a point near the add mark. Then when you next change your oil, put in the exact amount recommended, run the engine enough to fill the filter and let it sit for a few hours and check the level. Then you will see any dip stick error. EHM should not throw out any more oil than stock. A home made oil separator or Provent can have a drain line that returns the recovered oil to the pan.

Mine works fine if I top it off to 1/4" below the full line. EHM saves fuel? That is new one :roll:

It took me a few years to figure this one out, I guess some of us are quicker on the uptake.

Yes, it stands to reason that extra energy is required to push the excess oil out of the engine.
If so, maybe a good look at the dipstick level is warranted.

Thanks, I'll pay more attention to oil level immediately after next oil change. I've just never checked it before and seen it this low!

Another thing I forgot to ask is whether one should expect to see noticable exhaust from the new elephant mod hose. When at a stop and the wind isn't blowing much white smoke can be seen rising from below. I assume this is normal, but again didn't remember any mention of it in the mod description.

My '06 also does the same thing, I figured it was normal as well. Anybody know what the composition of this vapor is? ...is it the dreaded "oxides of nitrogen"?

I put a home-made oil trap on that line and drain it at every oil change. Yesterday I drained about 3 oz of oil out of it after 8k miles. Hardly enough to worry about, probably don't need the trap or the EHM if you have EGR disabled.

Yeah, I went ahead and ran my EHM all the way to the rear of the Jeep near the exhaust pipe and people kept telling my wife her car was "smoking" whenever she was stopped at a traffic light.
