Hey all,

I'm getting ready to swap out my fuel filter and head to a Racor unit. I'm following http://auerbach.ca/kj/racor/ . It seems the Racor model listed here (245R122) is 2 microns. Is that too small to run without a lift pump? If so, can you all suggest another Racor model?

I have that fuel head on my vehicle, added it before I added a lift pump. Can't say if 2micron was too small, but the fuel head alone didn't solve my hard starting issue. Lift pump cured all.

Before you buy the Racor, consider getting the new revised version of the factory fuel head. Might be able to get it replaced for free. Be sure to look at the fuel heater plug for signs of overheating, complain about not being able to hold a prime, air in fuel.

I'm upgrading now because my factory head is damaged. It seems to be warped. If the 2 micron works, I'll go with that. I don't mind adding the lift pump if I need to, but I gotta get this replaced before I go in for emissions.

I also have the racor, and I am happy with it but, I would do the revised if I had to do it over. Save some work, making it work. I did mine before the revised came out, or at least before I knew about it.

You can use the same head and install a bigger filter later if you want.
Lift pump cures a lot of problems and helps you go longer between filter change intervals with out loss of performance.

thanks for the help. I ordered most of the stuff yesterday. I don't have part numbers for the apex plugs listed in step D ( http://auerbach.ca/kj/racor/ ). That's all I'm really missing.

You don't really need them. A pair of small spade connectors that fit into the Temp sensor plug works as a temporary solution (I've had mine this way for about a year now).


Eventually I plan on reusing the plug off that I broke off the original sensor (just twisted it and broke it off), just need to get off my lazy butt and do it.

it's the piece on the bottom right of the pic. The plastic broke right behind where the original sensor leads were soldered to the backside of the pins, so I can just cut the new sensor wire to length and solder them on and heat shrink it up.

I haven't installed a lift pump yet, and haven't had any issues. Though I do plan to install one eventually.

I should have all of the parts delivered by mid next week. I'll let you know how the install goes. I hope this clears up the P990 (or whatever the fuel leak code is). My old filter head is warped, hence the full change.
