I understand that there are two different OEM fuel filter fittings on CRD. How do you tell the difference between the old one and the new, better one?

Well - there was one style stock and then after production stopped they made an update - so it would have to be replaced - so about 6-8 inches from the heater plug - the wire will be soldered.

here's bbo's photo.

On the original filter head both wire plugs are about the same size. On the upgraded filter head the heater plug (driver's side) is oval and wider by about 1/4" than the other plug and at least on mine has a bright blue cap instead of black/dark brown. As ATXKJ notes the new plug has to be spliced to the existing harness which can be done by soldering or I used marine grade butt connectors but the splice is inside a wire loom cover and may be wrapped in electical tape and hard to find. Much easier just to look at the plugs on the filter head.

Forgot to mention new wires are green and purple vs. old red and I think brown. See color picture at http://www.greendieselengineering.com/f ... st/76.page

Unless you live in the far North, unplug the fuel heater relay except for -20F or colder. I ran mine disabled at -14F last winter with no problems.

Will this cause the CEL to come on?
