On my Cummins, when cold starting the grid heater cycles for about 20 sec or so. On this CRD, it seems like the glow plug light in the dash only comes on for a couple sec when cold, and not at all when warm. Is this normal? Thanks! |

Yeah, that is about it for the Libby glow plugs, only a few seconds, I guess they put out plenty of heat in that time? They are ceramic. |

Longest I have seen was ~4 seconds at -14F when I was at the Airport. Our Canadian members who don't plug in may have seen longer on times. For me, if I am at home, I plug in at 0 F. |

I wish there was a way to make them stay on a bit longer, and the light on the dash stay on longer as a reminder in addition. I think that would be helpful. |

The longest I have seen them on is 4-5 seconds, at -35. |

The light on the dash on stays on for a few seconds -but the glow plugs stay on for a couple of minutes (the chart is in the Service manual) but it depends on outside temp and coolant temp. Quote: Engine.............Wait-To..........Pre-Heat......Post-Heat
Coolant............Start Lamp......Cycle..........Cycle Temperature......ON Key ON -30C................10 SEC..........35 SEC....... 200 SEC. -10C................10 SEC..........23 SEC........180 SEC. +10C................ 1 SEC..........21 SEC........160 SEC. +30C.................1 SEC..........20 SEC........140 SEC. +40C.................1 SEC..........19 SEC..........70 SEC. +70C.................1 SEC..........16 SEC..........20 SEC. |

I think I had mine light up for about 5 seconds at -10C once or twice. Normally it barely flashes if it comes on at all. |

The light on the dash is more of a "readiness to start" indicator than a "glow plug = on" indicator. |

mine never for more than 4-5 seconds last winter when it was 15°F but it ran rough for a few seconds after it started. Plugging in when its that cold is nice but it don't need to be all night. a timer set to run it 2-3 hours before you go in the morning is good enough. |
