Post subject:  Mystery wire

So, in an attempt to familiarize myself with the new (to me) CRD, I noticed a wire (not factory) running from the positive battery terminal, all the way to the top of the fuel tank. One of the few things I hate about buying used is not knowing what mods have been done by the previous owners. Any guesses? In tank lift pump is my guess?

PS: Probably a shot in the dark, but this is a forest green '05 CRD, and according to the maintenance history I found on the Jeep Owners site, most of the maintenance was done at a Jeep dealer (Allen Samuel's) in Ennis, Texas. Did this Libby belong to anyone here at one time? I'm not sure how it ended up in Idaho, but as clean as this thing is, it's obvious it was a southern rig...

If you think you know anything about it, shoot me a PM and I'll give you the VIN. I'm just curious about its history.

Thanks!

well running directly from the battery to a lift pump would be bad..its always on..constant battery drain.

do you know you don't have a pump in the tank?

Nevermind, wrong wire. The power lead from the tank runs up into the engine compartment and then thru the firewall into the interior. I haven't opened up the dash to follow it from there yet, but I'm guessing it would be running to a keyed on source. I don't hear any hum from the tank though, but this definately isn't factory, just a pain red wire zip-tied periodically to the fuel lines running down the drivers-side frame rails, and it does run to the top of the tank.

The one on the battery I was talking about earlier is running to a yet to be identified relay...

Also, yes, I have gathered from what I read here so far that these didn't come with a LP, so I'm guessing the PO put a LP in the tank. Of course, I also know what happens when I "assume"! Hahaha!!!

You do know that even though our CRD's didn't come with a lift pump they all came with relay, fuse and most of the wiring for one don't you?

If you have a 7 pin trailer connector it could be for the "battery" pin on that plug or possibly power to a brake controler.

No, I didn't know that there is pre-existing provisions for a lift pump. Thats good to know. Also, you may be right about the lead running to the trailer connector. I'll crawl back under it tomorrow and see if the wire pops out on the other side of the tank.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to absorb as much about these Liberty's as fast as I can, but all of my diesel experience is on HD diesels, and my Dodge Cummins so in the mean time, I'm sure to ask some dumb questions... I was hoping someone had already put a LP in, but now I'm thinking probably not, unfortunately. Oh well, I guess I'll start looking into low-pres LP's for these VM's...

There are alot of lift pump builds and post on here everything from and inline like the Kennedy to a cummins version. And what style filter head do you have on it ? And good luck on tracking down the pervious owner i hope you can so we can all know exactly wtf they were thinking.

Don't get too hung up on replacing the original filter head unless yours leaks. The general thinking is if the heater is not immersed in fuel it will overheat and if the air is kept out of them (think lift pump) they will not overheat. More then a few have their original filter head.
