Next problem to deal with is a stuttering and stalling pattern that started last fall and continued through the winter and summer.

Ron, the diesel guy believes it is the transmission. He believes once the shuttering begins, the line pressure increases and causes the jeep to stall....It only happens for the first 3 minutes at the most. Maybe stalls once or twice and then runs fine. He is recommending a tranni rebuild or new tork converter.

I bleed the fuel line at the filter but it didn't seem to help or change the pattern. Once spring comes, I really can't afford to loose the jeep for a couple of weeks. I am fine with preventive maintenance but do not want to spend 1600-2000 on a tranni rebuild if it doesn't need it. Here in NY people do not know much about the CRDs. Ron works only on diesel and he is the only mechanic I found who didn't say...jeep diesel?...I didn't know they ever made one....

I would be interested in your trouble shooting thoughts. I can take them to Ron and he can do a tranni service and check out the possible issues.

Thanks all,
Jim

Jim.

I don't know how much you've read here but there are two things that can cause the problem you discribe the first is air in the filter head after sitting but bleeding should should help but you indicate it didn't :?

So the next cause is fluid draining out of the torque converter when sitting overnight. Then on the first start of the day the clutch in the torque converter does not get enough fluid pressure to properly release. This was a real problem back in 2006 and was cured but it popping up again :grim:
The check valves in the screw on filter in the transmission can leak. The problem back in 06 is that there was a batch of Chrysler filters that didn't have check valves :banghead:
There's been a trend here lately that were a by filter replacement was the cure :D
So I would guess the check valves over time are deterioting :furious:
There has been a few threads recently about good and bad brands of filters

Take it to a good transmission guy and have him replace the filters and fluid. As I recall this is a required maintence item at 50k miles but I could be wrong on the mileage figure.

There have been several threads posted here about this problem with the transmission.
It has to do with a sticky check valve in one of the filters. (maybe the pump too?)
There is an updated filter available through the dealer that is supposed to correct it.

When it happens to me, it feels like the torque converter is locked up in 1st gear.
And when I push on the brake the engine fights and will stall.
So, immediately when I feel this happen I pop it into neutral to keep the engine from stalling.

What I do now, to prevent this from happening, is I move the gear selector through all
positions before backing out of driveway. Seems to be working so far.
Eventually I will have to do a complete transmission fluid and filter change. Hopefully that
will fix it for good.

I read through some of the posts on stuttering....It has been happening for so long, I wonder if it began some after the first transmission service I had. It has been a while and I have done quite of bit of towing so a tranni service would be timely anyway...

Thanks for the info.

I have been reading a lot of threads on tranni and TC issues. Think I will start with a service and get a new filter in there. If the check valve doesn't take care of it...then time to go to the next step.

Don't let some tranny shop take your money based on a guess, it is just air in the lines from filter drain back. Either get a new Mopar filter and hope it has a good check valve, or you can do this even easier if you don't need a fluid change viewtopic.php?f=98&t=55110

Looks easy enough to do.

It looks as if the check valve keeps the fluid from flowing back to the tranni.

It works like a charm, it saved me from pulling the skid, the pan, the filters, and buying new fluid$, filter$, gasket$ or $ealer, and putting it all back together on 2 CRDs. But if you are due for a fluid and filter change, I would get the Mopar filter and go that way.
